Appreciate the words JJ but have already been doing this a while and it's more just downsizing the operation. Completely agree with the locality thing and one of my products is actually just Surrey Honey. Theres a bee product supplier that does all the labelling for the producer (well, the owner of the bees, not the bees themselves lol) which are used pretty much universally in terms of design and naming.
This is for a whole range of different products, not just the one so needs to be more general. I can take care of the locality thing in the website etc

I think that you could make use of the two situations.

pickle and jam co uk is practical and should pick up the web searches but, once on the site, why not use the name 'Worth Preserving'?

Pickles and jams from the 'Worth Preserving Company'.

I know you already have your own company name but you can use a catchy name as well. :)

I think is clever - making use of the "co." bit :)

Although ... when said verbally from one person I wonder if it still works?

      the pickle and jam
      Dot Co
      Dot UK

      If you just say

      The Pickle And Jam Co
      UK

it works, but not sure people would type it in correctly from that "pronounciation"

Forget about all the search engine stuff, way too much is made of that. IME what is important is that people remember the brand name / tell others, and if the Domain name includes that (i.e. domain name = brand name) then when they type "XYZ" into their browser's address bar their browser will first-guess the right one.

For good search engine placement make sure you have proper and detailed descriptions; that's it!. Getting the URLs to contain the magic keywords is tosh, although SEO Experts make a fortune from it. The only benefit of "plain English" URLs is that in people's Favourites / Emails / Forum posts the reader can "see what it says on the tin" - compared to URLs like
      www.MyDomain.com?PAGE=1234&PRODUCT=ABC123
But Google will still rank that (cryptic) URL just the same, provided it has good / detailed content.

English URLs also suffer hugely if they get changed - make a typing mistake in your URL, change it a while later, and all the links then break - including all the free advertising from forum posts and email etc. (unless you have a sophisticated system that re-routes the original name to the new name). My clients override me on this point, and then wonder when some employee accidentally entered Product X as Y, then when they sort it out the logs show customers hopping around all over the place, but mostly clicking-off ... but client marketing departments still think they are on the right track - even thought their IT people are pulling their hair out by that point!

Yikes, now it's being overthought! Light, hobbyist, catchy while doing what it says n the tin. Not concerned with SEO or rankings and the tagline will be something like 'exclusively local small batch preserves'.
Leaning more and more the pickle and jam [Co.!] but do appreciate all the discussion - it's helping:)

So I've been back and forth over this and it's down to two. No three. No two. Or 4. Anyway, here's the 2 (that might change to 6) and the 'imagineering' behind the naming

Pickle & Jam - two characters called Pickle and Jam that can present a lighter side of selling stuff. Pro as it's simple and will pick up some web search traffic. Con, bit limited in scope.

Good life & Jam - Still playful and contains the word Jam, seemingly a pre-requisite in my thinking [note: must see doctor]. Pro as it's broader in play and not restricting to simply preserves. Might very extend it to having a good life (gardening tips, wine making etc) but keep the retail side to the preserves. Con, it's a bit ambiguous in title and lengthy.

Isn't it lucky I'm so decisive over this! Just to reiterate that although it's mentioned, I'm not bothered about rankings , SEO or the fuzzy logic of interwebby searches.

I should also note that whenever I do a web project, I project thoughts of what the site could become should I put the efforts in to it. I have never, ever maintained interest consistently enough to attain the lofty heights of said ambitions. It's just something I do and generally hampers things!

Pickle & Jam ... potentially ambiguous as to whether it is singular or plural - so might have to, also, register PickleS & JamS and, worse, both variants with one in the plural and the other in the singular.

Good Life and Jam is more likely to be understood / assumed to be in the singular.

But, for me FWIW, Good Life & Jam doesn't work. "Jamming" is not something I see people who are living the Good Life doing!

Ahhh, you're thinking living the good life - yachts and money? Whereas I was thinking good life as in The Good Life and having a healthy and good life. Even if you weren't it does raise questions

No, I was thinking of Felicity Kendall (probably in Jumpers where ... ermm ... she wasn't wearing one :heehee: but I digress ...)
