If she had been in a four wheeled vehicle she would be accused of tailgating, in itself an offence!

I've got rear parking sensors on my car and they're great - apart from when a spider makes his web across the sensor and, then, it yells at me all the time!

Rear parking sensors here too, I agree that they are too sensitive, start beeping even when I have loads of space.

That's where 3 factors come into play:

            1) The reversing light on the van. I saw it working in the video.
            2) The common sense of the van driver. Between his reversing light coming on and his van starting to move backwards there was a noticeable pause. Long enough for the driver to make as much observation as he could, and long enough to allow anyone he didn't see chance to see his intentions (left hand indicator, reversing light on, pretty solid indication of what he intends).
            3) Common sense of all other road users. I don't know about nowadays, but when I went to school we learned the green cross code and many elements of the highway code as standard, and we did a cycling proficiency course. All these things meant to teach us things like not hiding right in a large vehicle's blind spot for example. Even without such courses, surely it is just common sense.

Point 3 has obviously been missed in the incident in FC's video clip, and this is why there was nearly an accident. Sadly, it seem to me that common sense is often lacking among some road cyclists these days. There seems to be a prevailing attitude that they (the cyclists) are always right, and everyone else is wrong. I make no judgement as to who is usually right or wrong, as that depends on the circumstances but I'm fairly sure of one thing. If you've just had a van back over you and crush your bones, being in the right is not likely to be much consolation. If I was laid out, broken and dying, I somehow suspect that one of my last thoughts would not be 'he shouldn't have done that'.

I have rear sensors, they are a bit over sensitive regarding distance, I'd turn them off if I could work out how, I also had them on a mondeo a few years ago.

I backed straight into the corner of a stack of aluminium partitioning in a builders yard, not a sound was heard from the things, but they were working.
