Need Advise for new Lawn and levelling the garden

I m just concerned and worried about weeds that will germinate along with the grass, at what point how should I weed control? I want a perfect healthy lawn. I am not meant to walk on it just yet as it will be very weak but how do I control the weeds

I was wondering at at point, and how should I do the weed control I'm sure there will be plenty of weeds coming through along with the grass but I really want to control and get nice thick healthy lawn. I shouldn't be walking on it as its not strong enough to hand pick weeds so how and when shall I do that.

I have got a rotary mower, in next couple days I'm hoping to get it serviced myself either replace the blade or sharpen it.

 

Unfortunately you will be fighting weeds for some time, weed seeds can lay in the ground for years before germinating. I realise you want a perfect lawn but this year it's about letting it establish and strengthen, so don't feed it or attempt to kill the weeds before next Spring, both will damage a young lawn. You may be able to dig some out gently but even that could disturb the grass roots.

Your mower sounds fine. When you give the lawn it's first two or three cuts use it on a high setting and for this year don't attempt to cut it really short. Drop the blade to about halfway on its adjustment, no less.

As of next year (Spring - Similar time to when i seeded it this year) my plan is to aerorate it, get few tonnes of top dressing and overseed to eliminate any dips and highs that will form on the course of time and get good green lush full carpet

I realise you're eager to gain a good lawn, but hold fire on what you're planning for next Spring and see what condition it's in at the time. Meanwhile once the lawn is completely germinated you will be able to re-seed any patches where the seed missed or failed.

 

can someone please shed light on my situation, as you can see from my messaged my previous progress i m just gonna update with two pics ones taken on 10/05/21 and next on 12/05/21

you can see my grass is germinating however its germinating all over at very different rate im not overly concerned as the patchy area that appears on pic has a lot of very fine and odd grass blades also just in two days from 10th to 12th it look much denser and thicker and more areas are covered. is it normal for seeds to germinate at different rate, i would guess its to do with at what depth they are some might be deeper than other.

I just want reassurance from experienced people that in couple week it will all look green all over

you can see from my previous posts that i have had really good coverage of seeds so i m not worried about me missing any spots.

 

That's pretty normal. Some just takes better than others, depending on nutrients, moisture or just plain luck. Overseeding later will take care of any areas that are very thin. For now, just let it run. It's hard to wait and trust in it!

Weeds are always a problem. Until the grass plants are established though, you just have to leave the weeds be, otherwise you'll damage the seedlings.

That's very assuring and comforting to know that's its normal, I had that belief in myself anyway as I've done really good prep work and seeds are distributed evenly and adequately (not over doing it either). And there's visible changes at every morning I could see more n more area getting covered, but when u put in all that hard work I was being too critical. I'll give it another couple weeks and assess the situation then.


I don't want to jinx it but as of now I cant see any weed sprouting I did use good pre seeding regime to control weeds but it'll eventually come through at some point but so far soo good

Thanks for your message yeah it was hard work as my garden was full of crap from coniffers not planted grown wildly all over, hedges in between garden and lots n lots of rubble. I took 5 skips and 7 32 tonne lorries worth of rubbish out all by myself. Also for decking I hand bowled and wheel barrowed 9 tonnes of mot type 1 and 4 tonnes of sand, paver cement and what no all by myself I don't have alley way assess from drive to garden so had to do round trip from side.

All good asong as grass comes out really good and next spring I get edging done all over three sides with white decorative pebbles and 200mm wide pavers

I'll be happy I like minimalistic all green garden

 

I want plants on those panels , roses clematis honeysuckle thats just to name a few ...

 

FWIW, this is what I reseeded about 3 weeks ago. Pretty patchy, and an awful lot of weeds. (I live next to countryside, so everything blows in here.) You're not on your own.

 

Hey Graham, that's similar to mine in terms of patchy areas comforting to know its ok and that's how seed germinates.

I can understand your weeding problem its an heartache when we get weeds in the lawn. I earlier mentioned that i got no weed what so ever but upon closer inspection at the back on far right corner i have got lots of weed coming through its because behind is bit 25ish meters area between my garden and motorway that's full of weeds, trees and bushes. i guess i will have to live with it at least for this year.

here are few updated pics of how my lawn is coming through, any tips ideas would be welcome, i know you guys mentioned i can over seed really patchy area however i wanna give until end of may and then assess, if I need to over-seed and if I do decide to over-seed how do we do it? Do I need to slightly turn the soil over and seed it and rake it in or just throw seed over it and cover it with something and let it germinate?

It looks more patchy from upstairs bedroom window than looked from the patio but even the Ariel view now looks much denser!!

I will give until end of May to get it more denser then I will over seed if required.

 

What panel you mean here? on the edge of the lawn you mean?
