Mr Kandytold me earlier that he has seen a Blue Tit on top of our nest box so hopefully it is the same pair that has nested in there for the last three years [IMG]

Thanks for the link Lyn I will have a look properly at it later

We now have a pair of great tits showing a great deal of interest in our nest box. The male is often seen pecking around the opening before going in, whereas the female just flies straight in and has been roosting overnight for several weeks now. Hopefully they will produce some little ones [IMG]

Some other bird nesting activity has begun in the stump of our eucalyptus tree. A male wren has been working on a nest for three days now and we have been stood watching it for about an hour this evening, in and out gathering moss.

Wren nest building usually consists of the male building about five nests in different sites and inviting the female to chose one to lay eggs and rear the young, hope she picks the nest in our garden :D :D

At long last a pair of Blue Tits have finally decided to start taking in nesting material into one of our nest boxes. Not sure if they are our original pair that have nested in our Tit box for the last three years or a new pair. The box they are using is the Sparrow box that Mr Kandy put up for me,but I tried telling him to put it under the eaves to no avail so the sparrows won't use it

This time last year they were well under way and were sitting on eggs in March so obviously the weather or the hatching of the caterpillars for the chicks have changed.Anyway here are a couple of photo's that I took while the site was under migration..
This one of the pair possibly the male trying to make the hole bigger

And now he is having a rest and watching the world go by..

We have plenty of birds in the garden - blackbird, robin, blue tit, hedge sparrow, wren, thrush - and about ten nest boxes. Only the blue tits seem to favour nest boxes. The others ignore the boxes, and build elsewhere, even if I put a suitable box close to where they have built in past years. We have plenty of bushes, so they have a good choice of sites. I leave them to it at this time of year, and avoid pruning the bushes.

Empty nest boxes near the ground are often used by mice and we find the boxes full of seed husks, and in the winter the remains of holly berries, (so it isn't always the birds that take the berries).

At present we have two pairs of blackbirds that have just finished building nests. For blackbirds it seems the female does all the building, the male hangs around watching.

Great Pics Kandy! Fingers crossed this couple can get a mortgage for your des-res!

I have heard of toad-in-the-hole .... this must be tit-in-the-slit!

My mum has emptied an old pillow of its goose and duck down feathers around the garden and the birds are busily visiting and flying off with beaks-full of feathers. They have posh nests 'round 'ere you know!
