NEW CAMERA - OLD LENSES

The older lens lack the electrical contacts that talk to the camera giving it the image information and also automatically focusing, setting the aperture and/or shutter speed. Having said that most cameras can calculate the light coming through the old lens and tell you what shutter speed or aperture you might need, so basically you're in Manual mode. In the case of your Good Lady she is interested in Macro so it's mainly better to be in manual mode where she can focus after setting her aperture and ISO speed and the camera will set the shutter speed.

Naah, this is what GC is all about, FC, folk helping each other and giving ideas and support if asked for.

 

And that is why its the best forum on the net, bar none.

Seriously, I have been a member of a few forums (fora?) now, and while some have a really good community spirit (VWAF being another one with really genuine members), there is not one that can touch GC. That even shows in how infrequently there is any bickering/trolling/need for moderator action on this site - its a very rare thing for tempers to get frayed, and even when they do it remains sensible and civil 99.9% of the time.

However, that is only the case because of people like you who are willing to give a hell of a lot of their time to help and guide others.

Hi Freddy, fixed focal lenses are also known as Prime Lenses. And, yes, because of their construction they are known to be sharper than Zoom lens mainly because of their simpler build.
