Glad to hear it's getting sorted Rosa. One of the things with cars - and I fall for it all the time - is that you listen (and believe it to be right) to the guy telling you things eg, it has this that etc, it's OK don't worry about that, there's nothing wrong etc.

Your O/H did a good thing taking it to someone else. Obviously if it's an intermittant fault it can be very hard to find.

This is one of the problems with new cars (and I mean any car over 20 years or more, lol ), so much depends on electrical things. I remember about 15 years ago a man got locked out of his car & it was all electrical or something (& I'm talking personal experience here, I had an older car at the time, with a key lock, ha ha) and he couldn't get back in. He had to go to a local phone box(remember them, lol) to phone for help. Years ago, you could go under the bonnet & fix simple things. Nowadays - well I don't even know where the bonnet switch is, lol (ashamed:( )

Hope everything gets sorted for you, at least you've chosen the rubbish weather here so by the time you get it back it'll be sunny again!

    cheers

Always a good plan. I've had only one car breakdown since taking out breakdown cover 6 years ago. The last 6 years of premiums probably doesn't even come close to what it would have cost me if I'd had to pay for the rescue truck out of my own pocket. I had a really rubbish car at the time, an old Ford Escort 1.3. It decided to shed its exhaust on the M6. Not content with just a bit of the exhaust falling off as happens sometimes on older cars, mine had to go out with a bang. It quite literally exploded and the whole exhaust system, front to back just fell to bits. Technically I suppose the car was still driveable, albeit extremely loud, but so far from home I was worried about the prospect of unrestricted red hot gases and the odd flame (now that there was no baffles for it to pass through) being released right below the front seats, in the proximity of the brake and fuel pipes. Green Flag came out and took the wife and I to a hotel, and the car to a garage to get fixed.

Ah clueless, I thought your were talking about an old Escort there - oh I remember them, lol.

I believe it is actually illegal to drive a car without the exhaust (don't know the technical name for it/the offence). I have driven cars that have that lovely sound - a hole in the exhaust! Lovely to hear I think, not nice to know you have to have it fixed!

Years ago you could get a patch welded on, is that still available?

    cheers

I don't know about getting a patch welded on, but I remember Gum Gun paste and bandages. In fact I think you can still get it. Wouldn't have helped in my case though, not unless I could fashion an entire exhaust system out of it:)

thanks borrowers and clueless, yes hubby did the right thing as i had an awful feeling we were getting fobbed off, till the warranty was up, i might be wrong, but just aswell we took it somewere else first, to think we traded in a perfect running rover and they have it up for sale doubled the price on what we got, so they should fix the renault to perfect running order, i feel like ive had no pleasure in the new car its been up and down that road to that garage, will look forward to getting it back

Rosa, because the fault was diagnosed before the warranty ran out, you are protected by law anyway. Not that that's much consolation if the garage does try to fob you off, but I doubt they will now somehow. Reputation counts for a great deal in business, and if they think you'll press the matter I reckon they'll figure it is cheaper to just fix it properly than it would be to keep messing about. To be fair though, I reckon they probably didn't intentionally fob you off. It is just possible that the guy that had a go at fixing it before was just not that good at his job.

It will be a good car in no time, I'm sure.

Periwinkle, I drive an ancient car too. I have an ancient Volvo estate. I paid £300 for it and I love it. I reckon its the best car I ever owned (mind I've had a couple of bangers). Runs like a dream, built like a tank, and you could fit a small country in the boot:)

She's 15. (1994 L reg). Your Saab and Rosa's Megane would beat her hands down in any sort of race, or style contests, but my beloved Volvo would win on the haulage capacity front:)

hi clueless, ive had a dreadful day today, i went out in fiesta that garage gave me till i get my car back so i went to an industrial estate to pick up my new printer from comet and the fiesta started making real loud noises, called hubby on my mobile to call richard at garage, i continued driving and it got worse had to pull over on a main road with flashers going, till he turned up, so i decided to get out of car and the front tyre was ripped to shreds hehe i was sooo shocked, anyway he turned up and so did my friend, so he said it was a puncture, i went off to pick up printer and shopping with my friend for an hour till he did the tyre, he called a friend of his at a local garage near were i was, as there was no tyre in the car.
over an hour later he came to comet to pick me up and took me back to fiesta, it was a shame as the full hour he was busy on tyre it poured down with rain he got soaked, then it stopped when he picked me up and he had to close his garage what a nightmare.
anyway the renault its nearly fixed had new parts hes hoping to get it back this afternoon mmmm 4.30 now no call yet, hes going to call me as soon as he gets it back

    Sounds like a nightmare.

The garage shouldn't have let the car out without a spare. As far as I know it is a legal requirement to carry a good spare. The only exception being if the spare is actually in use, doing its job of getting you to the nearest garage.

Anyway, its good news that your Megane is nearly ready.

Just on the puncture story, if it makes you feel any better, although I can't match your nightmare I did have a similar misfortune once. One morning I managed to catch my back tyre on something sharp as I pulled into the car park on my way to work. It went off like a small explosive. It was a nice sunny morning but I was running a bit late for work so I parked up and left it until after work. Just as I came out of work, the heavens opened. I was dressed for mild dry weather. To make matters worse, I realised I'd left my good jack at home (having taken it out of the boot just the day before), so had to make do with the rubbish bog standard jack that barely lifts the car and takes about 10 minutes to extend. So dressed for mild dry weather, I'm laid on my back, in a puddle, with rain lashing down on me while I wrestled to get the jack lined up right. Then half an hour of messing about on my knees, before finally driving home drenched to the bone:)
