When it comes down to it, gardeners are quite eccentric people. And I am quite happy to be one.

Be careful what you compost as it can attract rats in the winter. My dad had rats in his composter bin, they burrowed under. Its worth sitting the council type green composters (slightly buried) on a double layer of nylon covered wire to prevent burrowing.

Rodents will eat anything TBH. We have a mouse in one of the big pots on the yard. If you let the dog out for a no.2 late in the evening, by morning it has been severely nibbled (the poo not the dog!). I have seen him at it the dirty begger !

Dee, I feel the same, why kill them for the sake of it? Like worms and moles and spiders and us, they are all part of garden life.

If you have a Staffie the pooh is nibbled as well. Broody things, eat anything. Is a Staffie a rodent?

Mice will probably get through the wire. Mice are fine, infact I have a mouse (who eats poo!) but its not good practice to encourage wild rats. Although the terriers used to scare them off.

ooohhh hope I don't get rats then, the bin is at the bottom of the garden, so hopefully they wouldn't come near the house anyway. How would I know if I had them?????

Another question, can I chuck hoover stuff in there???? I heard somewhere I think that I could, but want to double check.

When I got my composter, it was suggested that you don't use "Hoover" stuff if you've got nylon carpets, 'cause it doesn't rot down
