I'm vintage too @Clueless 1 v2, which is partly why I stick to the old way of doing things. Technology and I don't get on. For example - I daren't go anywhere near self service tills in supermarkets etc. because they go haywire. Most watches are a no-no, I have to stick to a particular make and problems arising on my laptop are never straightforward. So cloud computing is definitely for the next generation because this particular aging person is better off without it. :)

I stick to pre-recorded dvd's because I like to collect them and know they will function.

Sorry @ricky101 you're way off the mark unfortunately. :) My son lives in America so it's unlikely anything he sent me would function here. I buy the dvd's so I can watch particular tv series or films as I don't have a tv or anything else they would function on apart from my laptop. As I said to Clueless above, I also like to collect them.

Yes, my son will help after I make the initial choices, he'll take a look and whittle them down to the one that suits. For the obvious reason in my earlier post he won't be able to buy it for me though. I'm capable of making my own choice but he knows computers inside and out so he'll steer me with his knowledge.

The shop beginning with 'C' is the only one here that sells computers so I'm likely to buy online. I know exactly how 'C' operates from experience and they are usually my last port of call. :)

@pete when I bought my current laptop it had W8 installed. At that time W10 had not long been released and still had gremlins. My son suggested installing W10 as it would be easier for me to navigate than W8. He wasn't wrong, despite the ongoing issues with the new W10 at the time. So there's no reason why you can't install W10 to continue use of your laptop. :)

I liked my old tower system but when I moved into the last flat, instead of having my own computer room I had it in the living room and it took up so much space my wife suggested I replace it with a laptop. It was sadly in need of updating anyway so I was happy to change. Eight years ago I updated again to the laptop I currently use. I have a 27" monitor attached and, as I said, work on two screens. For my photography software, I have the image on the monitor and the controls on the laptop screen. In fact, I multi-screen with a few programs I use. I have a mouse attached to the laptop as I don't know how anyone can suffer a laptop pad and buttons.
My laptop has an internal and external optical drive. As well as the internal 750Gb hard drive I have two external hard drives. A 2Tb permanently connected and a 1Tb, which, like the second optical drive, is only plugged in when needed. Barring a major failure, that set-up will have to see me out.

You do now Jocko! I much prefer using a pad to a mouse.

I suppose it is what you are used to. I also play games on my laptop and the mouse gives me greater accuracy.

I used to have my Xbox 360 connected up and I played motor racing games with the Force feedback wheel and the pedal set-up (never had the fancy chair). I gave all those to my grandson when we moved here last year, again for reasons of space.
                  This was my set-up:

                    Hey all,

A younger one wants to know which brand of laptop to get, a HP or a Lenovo ?

Both have a £400 price tag and use a similar Ryzen 5 processor etc, so its all down to which is considered the more reliable ?

I am not clued up on laptops or mobile phones, I leave that to the kids.
My daughter wanted a laptop for Uni but she decided to go for a Chromebook, I assume it must be adequate for her needs.

I purchased the Chromebook late August for £399, which my daughter picked.

                    chrome.jpg

                    But now its £499

                    Buy ACER Spin 513 LTE 13.3" 2 in 1 Chromebook - Qualcomm SC7180, 128 GB eMMC, Blue | Currys

Only advice I can give, don't wait to long to purchase one, you could easily find they have gone up by 25%

HP has a better reputation and quality.

Someone just quoted us this -

HP laptops are like the Iphones, and more expensive
Lenovos are more the Androids, cheaper but still decent

                          fair comparision ...?

Pays your money and takes your choice....

Like Jocko I also have an eight year old HP and have never considered Lenovo. My next one will probably be HP, although I will look at Asus too. My son switched from HP to Asus earlier in the year and is impressed with it. I used to like Acers but they changed the siting of the letters on the keys and that put me off.
