Started my search today for a new laptop ahead of the January sales. I currently have an HP but have been looking at both those and Asus and I think I'll be staying with HP. Currently there are two that suit my needs and I'll continue the search tomorrow. Once whittled down it's over to my son to give the yea or nay. :)

      Hi Sheal

So many places selling them and their prices seem to change daily /weekly so worth keeping a regular eye on the prices to make sure you do get a good deal.

Have you seen this supplier one of the biggest and been around for many years, its where those young ones we mentioned got their new laptop from.
We have bought a few things from them over the years, though a lot of folk swear by John Lewis and their 2 year guarantees, though their stocks seem to go fast.

Have had chance to play around with W11 recently and its hardly any different from W10.
We have a 15.6" screen on our old laptop and find that so much easier on our old eyes than the 14" etc.

Windows 11 is current but a lot of older stock comes with Windows 10 already installed but the hardware is suitable for Windows 11.

I'll add to that - the Asus is the better machine but storage space is half that of the HP, which I have to make up my mind about.

Might be too late if you have already been to Currys, but its a fine line choice.

Would not be bothered about the storage difference unless you are saving masses of photos etc, plus its quiet cheap and easy to change from 256gb to 512 gb if ever needed.

The HP has a slightly slower processor than the Asus, but again not a deal breaker.

Think the bottom line is which appeals to you the most in terms of the screen image and how the keyboard feels.

Without seeing either, think we would be drawn to the HP with the bigger screen as it could be easier on the eye, but the smaller Asus screen image could still look better and brighter ?

One last thing, when you start up a new laptop you often get bombarded with lots of "bloatware" etc so it does take a day or two to clean things up to how you want, so don't be too worried by intial appearances.

                    Good hunting ! :)

Suspense over! I went into Curry's to buy the Asus today and came out with the HP. A bit more than I wanted to pay but it suits my requirements.

That was what made my mind up Ricky. I took a 'break down' list of current storage with me and my photo's use the most. I have around 7000 at the moment and adding to them on almost a daily basis. The assistant had previously suggested the Asus, but said I would probably find I'd need an external drive for storing them in a couple of years. Needing constant access to them and the thought of having to load them back on to the laptop each time, it was a no brainer.

That's never been an issue for me. My current HP has served me well at eight years old and has been limping along for the last year. Any new laptop is going to be faster.

My current HP has a 15in screen, my previous Acer had a 17in screen, so I don't mind either.

Thanks for the info. :) I don't get on with technology so after the initial set up I will install Teamviewer for my son to take over.

The hp was the one I would have selected mainly due to the storage capacity. I never have enough storage.
I remember when we bought our first PC it had a 1.2Gb hard drive. I remember saying to my son, "We will never fill that",

Yes, it makes sense Jocko. I couldn't see the point of buying a computer that wouldn't be fit for purpose in two years without add-ons.

But it appears they all need add ons these days, doesn't it.

I dont know much about the cloud but isn't that where we are all supposed to store stuff these days. My old lap top has 1000Gbs of storage.

It does, probably to make more money. The external dvd drive I bought today was nearly £40. My son said today that Apple were the ones that started producing computers without the SD card slot and the other companies followed suit. Apparently Apple got so many complaints they have put them back in the one's they've produced this last year.

I won't risk losing my photo's on a cloud or someone else making use of them.
