you might also want to try wood mulch. I've found it to be quite good at keeping the weeds manageable, doesnt stop them all but even when the mares tail was growing through and i went to pull it out it was coming out great and felt weak.

 

Don't be fooled by the mares tails mgn I have never known it to be weak yet those roots can grow 30ft you are only pulling the top bit out,I have started using a flame wand every time it pops through, apparently it does cell damage that disrupts the growing potential of the runners, up to now it seems to have slowed it down some.
