    Hi everyone,

moyra, thanks for elaborating, no need to apologise :)

TeeGee, thanks for your alternative suggestion, and for the helpful pictures :) As we've already started following moyra's advice, I think we'll continue to persue the 'cordon' method this time.

Mr Mac has taken charge of this one, and has been out removing the shoots and lower leaves today.
Just one truss so far, will keep you posted.

Thanks again to everyone, and good luck Ant & hammer with yours too!

    Beki x

Anthony & Beki, do not be tempted to take off too many leaves at first as they are necessary for the development of the plant. One or two wilted or yellowing ones at the bottom is ok. Really the taking off and halfing of leaves should take place once the tomato's have set and grown and you want to get more light to the fruit.

When you get to this stage just cut off the growing tip a pair of leaves above the last truss.

One suggestion to add to to sage advice so far. It might be a good idea to to put the plants into a larger pot as the one they are in looks a tad small for two plants. I've got one growing in a similar sized pot, but it's an experimental plant that was started in early December and I've restricted it to just two trusses.

Dave, I think Beki intended to put them into the garden unless she changed her mind. But agree they will need bigger pots and separating if not on the same stem.

    Hi All
I am also new to this veg growing thing and have lots of Tomato plants at different stages which I have grown from seed. My question with side shoots is When should I start to pinch them out? my largest plant is about 3ft tall and growing like mad but doesn't have any trusses yet.

    Thanks in advance
    Martin

Good grief Martin at 3ft tall I would expect to see several trusses on a tomato plant. Are you sure there are no trusses on it.......Please forgive me as I don't intend to be rude but do you know what you are looking for? If you go to the start of this thread you will be able to read all that has been said with regard to raising tomatoes and there are some photos too which have been added to show you what a truss looks like and what a shoot looks like. For anyone new to growing Tomatoes I would recommend starting at the beginning of this thread chronologically to read and discover most of what you need to know about raising tomatoes.

You are right I don't know what I am looking for as this is my first attempt at growing any vegetables including Tomato's. Now just to add some confusion my father inlaw has been round today and he thinks that the plant in question may not even be a Tomato plant.

I purchased a packet of Suttons Gardeners Delight Tomato seeds and started them in seed trays indoors. this particular plant was the first to germinate, in fact it may have done so a week or two before the rest. It is now twice the size of any of my other tomato plants and has different looking leaves. Don't laugh but father inlaw thinks it's a weed (he might be right) so I am going to take some photo's and post them, hopfully someone will know what it is.

Now Moyra you see how much of a novice I am, but I'm having fun and who know's I might even grow something edible one day.

    Martin :(

"Life Scotty, but not as we know it it"

Certainly slightly tomato'ish but it ain't like any tom' I've ever grown! I don't think you've got a tomato there, but as to just what it is I haven't got a clue. But I bet that someone on GC knows exactly what it is!
