    It's sad about your plant losses Nigel, but I suppose inevitable with the work that needs to be done.

      Yes it is a bit sad about the plant losses, but a couple of them had struggled with the dry hot summer and I knew that there would be damage and if I'd have thought about it a bit more I should have probably dug some things up and moved them to safety. However I hadn't realised how much growth there was on the cupressus and all this smaller stuff had to be dragged out at some point even if the "picker upper" carried bundles of it to the shredder.
      Also from being, essentially, dryish woodland the whole microclimate has changed; a lot more light, still some shelter and shade though and the cupressus would've been taking a lot of water out of the soil so probably be damper.
      It's an opportunity to redevelop the whole strip.
      Also the amount of light now reaching the front bed means that growth there will be very different.

        I should say all the petrol driven hand tools used, with the exception of a blower, where Stihl and quieter than I had expected; note still not that quiet.

                To add to the casualty list a hellebore and an agapanthus, although they will probably come back.
                Bad news the self seeded cordyline in clump of Iris foetidissima has come through unscathed and I'm sure the Japanese anemones exiled here, for trying to take the garden over, will reappear.
                The ornamental ferns came through almost unscathed, one small one got pulled out of the ground and lost a frond, it's now repotted in a place of safety until I see if it pulls through and starts to grow again.

                    A whole new area to play with Nigel and the extra light is a bonus. :)

                        No there was no requirement to do so imposed by the council;
                        "Due to the number of trees near the property replacement planting isn’t viable as their
                        likelihood of establishing is low." So I have a free hand, the tree surgeons left a self seeded Scots Pine (4 ft tall) and a Yew seedling, debating whether to remove or move as I like both.
                        Probably be a mix of perennials, shrubs and small trees with bulbs tucked in.
                        Area is about 90 ft long by about 10 ft wide to the base of ivy covered bank. However that doesn't include the area churned up between the remaining trees, might have another measure up tomorrow.

                          It suddenly dawned on me today that a strip of wood chippings approx 80 ft long by 6 ft wide and up to 18 in deep in places: makes a very large cat litter tray.
