I can't believe it's that long @NigelJ - I had to look at the first page of this thread to confirm! Makes me realise that I have to get on with clearing some goat willow and sycamore at the end of my garden, because it will take a while to recover

My word what a saga. Only just seen this thread. Interesting comments about TPOs. I volunteer at a Horticultural college in N. London, bizarrely a previous college principal had a blanket TPO on the whole site!! Given that they do aborial courses and train tree surgeons you can imagine the issues this causes.
I work in the Japanese garden, at the back there was a line of 4 very large pines. It has taken more than 5 years to even begin to get permission to deal with them even though a large branch came off one in a storm, it ripped right into the heartwood . Even more some branches overhang a glass roof over a corridor which is the main route from reception into the gardens. Some work was done earlier this year but there is still more to do. Given the expertise available on the site you would think it would be much easier, so it's no great surprise that individuals have so much trouble.

The area to the back of us has a blanket TPO covering thousands of trees, set up in 1971. I've recently asked the council to review it as it's not appropriate to good tree health and they're looking very tatty and congested now. I don't think councils tend to use blanket TPOs now so that's a plus.

Good to know the garden recovery is going strong :)
