    Mary,
I use a high tech camera which lets me take full control of everything,so for night shots,i just disable the flash. If you tell me what camera you've got,i can google it,and maybe suggest what settings i would use.

    Rosa,
The lighting on your bridge pics was excellent.Get a tripod or beanbag, and do it again.Ive tried to repair your pic a bit,but its very limited on how far you can go.

    Difficult one Mary.
If your shooting late evening shots,i'd use the night scene mode.It says that flash will only fire if everything is too dark.In late evening, there should be enough ambient light.
If its too dark,i think i'd use landscape mode.Flash wont fire. The problem there lies with the fact that i cannot see anything about exposure times. If its automatically calculated, then ok,if not, you'll get a black,or at least very dark image.
These cameras are good, but your very restricted on creativity.Try the settings above,i see what works best for you.
Dont forget to use a support of some kind.
    Joe

I have a panasonic and it takes good night shots , but as already been said you have to keep the camera very still.
Best with a tripod or balance on a wall or something solid.

Many thanks Dave, the first and last images above are from your neck of the woods..so to speak. Both are in Glasgow.
