I've just come across this thread today, and just followed it from start to finish. Top work. Truly inspirational. It just goes to show how far a bit of grit and determination can go. I'm inspired by your effort. It's going to look amazing once your plants fill out a bit more.

Thanks all, and I'm pleased to be found an inspiration :)
You're right JDK, I will need it keep it well watered. Unfortunately, my 3 water butts are now nearly empty and the down pipe which feeds 2 of them has disconnected itself.

Which is why I'm currently doing a rain dance...

    Sorry

Deepest respect, NurseWhen. It's looking great and will mature splendidly, I'm sure.

Well it's been while, but I'm still digging it up but now I'm also putting stuff in!

I recently got rid of my modem at home and my website went with it which is why all the photos have vanished. I hope to re-instate them soon along with the latest pictures of what is now a garden and not a quarry.

    Watch this space :)

      Right, so to recap.

I've cut the lawn into three joined circles and put a brick edge around one side and started planting inside.

the plan was that the bricks would go round one half of the circles and the box hedge would run along the other side.

However, I miscalculated the number of box plants required and ended up with almost twice as many as I needed. So what I've got now is more of a parterre with the box running round the whole of the circles.

Unfortunately there wasn't quite enough for the whole lot, so I'll have to get yet more to finish the circle closest to the house.

So here's is the garden this spring with my liddle hedge and a lovely show from the tulips I'd put in in the Autumn.

To help out the tulips, I added some Senetti (purple and white pretty stuff) and 3 yellow wallflowers to the far circle

While I'm waiting for the perennials to get bigger, I've thrown around loads of seeds and now have lots of field poppies, californian poppies and cornflowers growing all over

Oh, I forgot to mention the lupins which were supposed to be red and yellow and are instead a boring purple. The Alliums put on a nice display. The Rudbekia's been a disappointment. All the flowers have been really shy and stayed down below the leaves. I was having a problem with slugs munching the new growth but some copper wire stripped out of a hifi cable sorted that out amazingly well. Unfortunately, it doesn't work so well in the back garden where the slugs drive round in cars. That's another benefit of the topsoil, it's quite sandy and the slugs don't like it as much as the clay I have round the back.

I think next time I'll have poppies in one circle, californian poppies in the bit in between and cornflowers in the middle. At the moment, they're all messed up together and it's looking a bit scruffy. The poppies are a bit of a mixed blessing. They look fantastic in the morning but the flowers only last for 1 day, so by the evening they look a bit sad and on a hot day they look sad by the afternoon.

So here's the long view. I've not included the circle nearest the house as it's still bare earth. There were three huge Skimmias under the windows which I had to dig up, but I'll replace them with a showy one in the middle of the bed. The rest of the bed will be more shade loving plants, but the part nearest the house needs some more quarrying and I just can't face that right now.

Heavens! it's been a while and it looks like I've moved the flickr photos again. In fact, I've changed my e-mail and had to return as Agentwhen rather than nursewhen. Still me though. Happy new year and (high pitched voice) 'God bless us every one' :)
