The plaque was oiled on the back aswell, and having removed it from the wall most of it has washed off, which accounts for the wall stain. It's oak, which is quite a dense wood and therefore I don't think the oil had penetrated it. It has definitely sanded out, there are absolutely no traces of it at all. It possibly only had one coat.

I think I'll be making a visit to the chap that made it for me, to tell him the oak oil is no good for exterior use. Apparently he hadn't been using it very long anyway.

Out of interest, can someone show me a link to oak oil?

I work with oak for a living and have never heard of it, and can't find anything about it from my quick Google search.

 Strangely Eddie I can find no real mention of it either but I did find this article that talks of Becker's "Acroma Oil" for Oak..

You might find this a very intersting site Eddie if you haven't seen it..

As I said I've never heard of "oak oil" either, but there are so many new finishes around these days.
But being an oil I doubt it would be something new.

As for yacht varnish, well, its ancient and takes days to dry.
I'm sure something along the lines of a clear Sadolins might be better.

Or some of the modern water based stuff, although I have my doubts about that also, but it is "environmentally friendly", as I'm always being told.:D

    Hi EddyJ,

I know the chap bought the oak oil on the internet but I don't know the site name.

I'm over that way next week, if I remember I'll pop in and ask for details, and tell him oak oil is no use outside!
