Obesity and type two diabetes have increased markedly in the last 50 years, there are a number of reasons for this: change of lifestyle; how many people now do hard manual labour every day? Central heating if your house is warm you do not need to burn so many calories to stay alive. Unfortunately the calorie intake has not necessarily dropped in proportion.
The diet has changed over the years more preprepared meals, fast food, in part because some people find it easier than cooking from scratch. Cost; food is more affordable now than it was when I grew up. Availability; it is very easy to buy food 24/7, education; home economics has virtually gone; there are many other reason s all related to modern life.
Much of today's food is easily digested providing a quick surge in blood sugar that the body has to deal with by producing insulin to tell the body to store sugar.
In India and China, and others, there is a move to a "Western Diet" and type 2 diabetes and obesity is rapidly increasing in these countries.

I have a different view on all this - it's all down to money...most things are.

The Gov't want us to live longer healthier lives so that we can continue to work, pay more tax and draw less on NHS resources.

At the moment the emphasis is on diet and exercise to achieve these financial aims, if we ever get to the stage where everyone is living into their 90's - something else will come up.

I still say - let me know the risks - and let me make an informed decision as to whether I want a Big Mac (other burger brands are available ).

My view is the government Dont want us to live longer, last thing they want is a load of old geriatrics hanging on, they would prefer us to all die about two years after retirement age, like most used to, if they were lucky, lots never got to draw a pension.
Trouble is with modern medicine people are actually living longer, at the moment.

I say at the moment because in future years I wonder what will happen, as the fat generation take over from the generation that we have now, entering old age.

I just think maybe the fat generation will have had their share of the NHS before they reach 50.

I think the Government have far too much else to do than worry about my health or diet, or whether or not @martin-f eats four eclairs, three yoghurts, and a full packet of M&M`s in ONE go :stirpot: - and I notice that not all of ''the fat generation'' are actually fat.

They acknowledge that people are living longer - so much so that the state pension and Local Government retirement ages have and will continue to be increased - if it's left at 65 - there won't be enough money in the coffers to pay the pensions.

On the one hand the Government are trying to increase life expectancy - whilst on the other they are aware that this will, if it is successful, put unbearable pressure on pension finances.

So everyone must be just healthy enough to not overburden the NHS; to work well into their old age and then croak it just before or after they draw their pension.

As I say it's all down to money.

Perhaps not entirely representative of the times, but can you spot one fat a rse amongst that lot that you would be unable to get by in a supermarket aisle;).

It's a combination of today's sedentary lifestyles and over-indulgence in ready meals/processed food. Many of the youngsters I work with live on pot noodles and their idea of entertainment is to sit and watch a 5 hour box set every evening.

The other thing is this nation's obsession with low-fat foods. Eating fat doesn't make you fat, but eating low fat foods stuffed with sugar does.

There are in my opinion so many reasons for people being so over weight...we don't teach children to cook properly, let's bring back home economics in schools! Let's learn to cook a sprout & a potato....yes I mean vegetables, let's ditch the ruddy KFC & Burger King etc....it's NOT cheap it's full of fat, get rid of ruddy happy meals which teach kids to eat cr@p & be rewarded with a toy :nonofinger:!
To name but one....Rustlers burgers :wallbanging: £1 for a bun, beef or chicken, cheese & sauce which you put in the microwave for a few minutes...how can that be good for you? (Before you ask no I don't eat them the men at work do). Cakes/biscuits placed at checkouts & at the end of isles in a supermarket....fill them with fruit if you must fill them! Fizzy drinks...they are everywhere you go (sometimes with three dam straws poked in the top of a plastic cup....don't get me started :mute:) until the supermarkets change their way of displaying food & we all start cooking from scratch or slicing up some salad every night then the majority of the population will be fat ....I love cake, biscuits, pastry & Ice cream as much as the next person but I also know it's not healthy to eat that everyday...I'm not perfect & I carry a bit of extra padding in some places ;) but the majority of what I eat is as fresh as it can be & doesn't come out of a ruddy box! I have fruit everyday & either salad or vegetables in my pack up & the same for dinner....then I have some cheese & a glass of prosecco :doh:joking aside the amount many people drink now is also another factor.
Medication is also another factor too much information but since I had my coil fitted I've gained some weight....hopefully that will soon disappear...there are many other meds which cause weight gain of course.
Then last but by no means least clothes sizes....the last pair of work jeans I bought were from next size 10 :yikes: I'm NOT a size 10, I'm a 12....stop messing with the sizes of women's clothes & giving us a false sense of size! :nonofinger:
