With all portraits I always spend a lot of time positioning the eyes exactly the right distance apart, the right size and relationship to each other, then the length of the nose relative to the eyes, and same again with the mouth. Time spent here pays dividends later!

How the hell you do it without guidelines I just cannot imagine? ;)

I suppose for any members looking at the different styles and speeds of drawing/painting on GC, you could equate it to the:

    Greyhound
    terrier
    tortoise

    I know my place! :D :D

Not sure what I am then - terrier? Longest I ever spend on a pastel or painting is a couple of hours. With pastel you can fiddle for ever and over work it. With watercolours you have to be quick as so much depends on painting wet into wet. Wait too long and you get the dreaded cauliflower stains.

Attending a life class is the best training for drawing. You get several 10 minute poses of a standing model and then a longer one of 30 minutes in a more comfortable sitting or lying position. You have to be quick and get the proportions right using the good old technique of eye, thumb and pencil. With still life - you can take your time as nothing is going to move.

There is no right or wrong way.
