For 3d I used to buy a 1/4 pound bag of Sun-Pat salted peanuts that were sold hot from the the special Sun-Pat heater.

You're just greedy if you want a litre at a time and who wants a piddly little half litre! :roflol:

After decimalisation and metrication had been in for some time I was speaking to a teenager, born after the changeover, and he said he didn't understand any pre-metric measurements.

I asked him how much did he weigh and how tall was he? He said he was five foot eight and ten stone two. He didn't even realise that they weren't metric.

            My first mortgage was 14k.
I was worried about paying such a colossal sum.
We made do with second hand furniture and holidays in a tent, with our old car.
But it was the best thing i ever did, and going back i wouldn't change it. Worth every sacrifice to own your own home.

Our first mortgage was £2,700 (old money - to keep on topic :roflol:) and we spent the first three months with no furniture at all apart from a second hand bed. We sat on cushions on the floor.

Actually those seem to be the happiest moments. And they stick to your brain.

Same here with my very first apartment in a 200 year old house. The old lady living there just died at the age of 90-something and I got a chance to rent it for little money instead of paying LOADS at the student dorm. Started with a single old gas stove left behind and every improvement was something to be happy about.

I collected almost everything together from friends and family until I had a rather awkward looking place to call home. But it was mine

Remember it well, my first day as a One Man Bus driver/conductor, some of the old girls were saying, "How much is that in old money"

I thought that statement was when he devalued the pound.

Correct :blue thumb:. It was four years prior to decimalisation.

How was a devalued pound not affecting the one in your pocket.. He was having a laugh. Must admit I'd not remembered it was four years prior.

Well what he meant was a pound would still be worth a pound in the shops, but it would be worth less against the Dollar etc.

It was 14% less worth in the shops overnight..but in fairness to Harold he inherited a lot of debt when he came to power. I was eleven in1967 so it's nice to google the history ;)

It was only worth less against anything imported.
Its only the same as what goes on these days, remember the big fuss around "floating" the pound some years later I believe.
The Pound goes up and down all the time these days.

Agree. I have always been good at maths, but despite the metric system being easier, I get muddled. Even now when buying . I get the tape measure out to get some idea.
