That was one part that really made me cringe. Not because of any connection with the riots (I'm sure the french will remember that they've experienced riots at least on a par with ours in recent years). No, it made me cringe because it was introduced as represent the rave era. I lived the rave era. I was a hardcore raver in my youth, and two things immediately sprung to mind. 1) Firestarter didn't come out until the rave scene was almost dead, and was positively mild anyway and 2) At a rave, nobody dances in unison, in regimented rows and columns, people just went mental in tightly packed sweaty crowds, with one person always being slightly more crazy then all the rest because he's taken too many filthy synthetic substances. And if it was supposed to represent a rave, how come there wasn't a drunk/tripping lass getting a bit carried away and getting her boobs out and climbing onto someone's shoulders for the world to see?

I agree its like they were trying to reinvent our history, as if we have always been multi-cultural even back then

The 750 performers were amateur volunteers. Boyle did look back to the agrarian past etc, but he was working with the here and now, not trying to do a faithful reconstruction. He picked, he chose and he deliberately included anachronistic details. It was his vision of Britain, a 'wonderful, bonkers mess' as one journalist put it.

Maybe her Maj. is an early bird like me. Not a night owl. She was probably home, bathed and in her nighty after the barge debacle a lot sooner than she was last
        night.

Our official saint chap, St George, was from the part of the world we now call Turkey.

Until now I would have said that, however bored, tired or otherwise miserable HM was feeling, you'd never catch a glimpse of it in public, let alone see her inspecting her fingernails like a bored TOWIE babe. TBH, Jenny, she looked a bit confused and pee'd off right from the start. And I hardly saw her crack a smile all evening. Maybe she was regretting that parachute spoof or something. The only times when I have seen her looking more dour were back in the days when she had to attend the FA Cup Final.

(I forget who it was, but I remember a showbiz star saying that he once met the Queen and asked if she liked football. Not really, came the reply. So he asked if he could have her cup final ticket.)

She's our Monarch and no one is more commited to the job than she is. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
She likes horses, corgis and roughing it up in the Highlands. I don't like any of those things and can choose not to get involved. She can't be so selective and has a duty to perform. I doubt whether there were many 'Lympicphiles of 86 attending the Ceremony.
She rarely smiles, but those that come naturally to her are a treasure and her face really does light up.
              I went to bed - she didn't,

I'm just loving all the propaganda. You'd think we were at war or something. Apart from being told repeatedly during the build up that we are all excited, except for one loony who dared to grumble, today we've got the old reverse psychology going on. The news is reporting how many foreign media sites/stations found the ceremony 'too British' or eccentric etc. Fantastic move, how to make sure the last of the nay sayers suddenly decide it was all brilliant and how dare johnny foreigner criticise us as they couldn't do any better.

                  Apologies Robajobs:
"I doubt whether there were many females devoted to the Olympic Games who were aged 86 that were in the Stadium"
                  hope that was clearer,

I hate to say it, but when I heard his named mentioned, I was surprised as I thought I'd heard he'd died some years ago. Obviously I was mistaken, but then seeing him stood there still and expressionless, being held up by an aide, I did briefly consider the notion that something sinister was afoot.

I think it would be difficult for the Americans to understand the historical and cultural aspect because they haven't got much.
