They taste good, sweet and hot.

    They don't store well though.

Very partial to boiled onions in white sauce @JWK , yours must take an age to cook but maybe you “ cheat” and cut them up before boiling? I would like to have a go at these. I already grow onions, some from sets and Golden Bear from seed, starting those off in a heated propagator about Christmas time. Not living in even a vaguely warm part of the UK! would they do better in my unheated greenhouse? It is pretty big 8 ft x20ft and could grow them instead of where I grow Sweetcorn next year as a change. Does the seed store well or are you best to buy a small quantity if they don’t keep viable for say 2 to 3 years like many veg seeds do? Sorry for the 20 questions

Hi @hailbopp Those that don't get eaten raw in salads get frozen. I slice and chop them and open freeze, then into plastic freezer bags, it's easy to scoop a handful out for adding to curries, stews etc. I've never thought about boiling them in white sauce, you mean they are cooked whole? Sounds nice, we like adding whole onions to roast chicken in the bottom of the roasting pan, but that's with ordinary sized onions.

Mine are from seed, I'll PM you in a minute about the seed, I've found onion seed store for at least 2 or 3 years, although I buy fresh each year for the ordinary onions.

I think they will do well in a greenhouse if you have space, that's how the giant veg growing boys do it further south, I've never tried here as they get big enough for me outside. The main thing is to get a really early start, early December if you can.

I bought 250g of Stuttgart onion sets this pm and have seeds for some pink onions. Roscoff pink onons are a well known "gourmet" delight but I think my seeds are for Niort. I'll sow them in spring and we'll see.

have to say I really dislike whole boiled or roast onions as the texture is not good for me but I do use a lot of onions for roasting as wedges with mixed mediterranean veggies - ratatouille with texture - or under roast pork or sausages or chicken........ Then there are curries and casseroles and soups. Lots of onions needed in my kitchen.

Brought my normal onions and shallots from the allotment to properly dry out on the patio before storing

Well you are all doing so much better than us. Our onion crop is virtually non existent. Maybe spring onions but even then no. Not sure how we went wrong this year but we did do well with the shallots and now all pickled.

                  A good harvest @JWK .

Most of my shallots this year are too small to bother peeling! Garlic bulbs not much fatter.

Nonetheless I shall be trying again with Stuttgart oinions, shallots and garlic to plant this autumn. I can't think we'll get two wet winteres in succession but I'll provide extra feed just in case and, like all gardeners, hope for better crops next year.

My garlic have been small this year, not sure why as all the onions did well. I am going to get new bulbs from the Garlic Farm next week and give them some tlc. Apart from weeding I don't feed and they didn't need watering this year, maybe too much rain as everyone else appears to have small garlic too.

Not just rain but too many grey sies and not enough sunshine @JWK. Garlic likes sunbathing and well-drained soils.

AlthoughI dont have many, (i didn't plant many:biggrin:) my red onions did quite well due to more moisture early summer than usual.
The garlic turned out ok but the corms are are split and not tight as they usually are.

Just my few, some are bigger than I like tbh, but these few will last me until after Christmas, I dont eat many and usually buy white ones if I need them. DSC05926.JPG
