Matlock Bath (lovely riverside walk, old pubs, illuminations along the river for a week or so per year)
Castleton village (nice place for a meal at the start/end of a nice walk or bike ride)
Mam Tor (excellent views for miles)
Fairholmes (car park and visitor centre at start of lovely scenic walk/bike trail).

The list just goes on and on. There's a good reason why the Peak District is one of the most popular areas on mainland UK.

Joolz, when it's on your doorstep you tend not to do the touristy bit, but while the weather's good I'm trying to build up my I-O-M pictures. Having said that the Manx Grand Prix (old motorcycles) started today for a fortnight, so, because of road closures I'm going to be pretty much housebound as I live on the course. :)

I'm a fair trek away from there now, back in my home area of Teesside, but I lived in Sheffield for nearly 11 years up until a couple of years ago.

I forgot about Chesterfield. Its brilliant. Its a nice town in itself but I love the crooked church spire. Legend has it that the rich chap that commissioned the construction of it got upset when the skilled craftsmen told him that you can't use fresh timber for the main support beams, and the rich fellow ordered them to do it anyway, so the fresh timber matured, dried, shrunk and warped the spire. Fantastic.

As for driving through Sheffield, easy, as long as you don't fall foul of the one way system. I could always get from one side to the other in a max of 45 minutes without breaking any speed limits, even in rush hour. You get to know the little roads and back alleys after a while:)

Cracking shots Sheal, we used to come to the island for many years for the Manx GP, but not been back since 1980.. We always stayed at Port St Mary, but Glen May was a favourite of ours to visit & of course Jurby, that beach is fantastic & the number of times we braved the cold water to have the odd Seal swim along with us.. A great place to live Sheal..

MGP is on at the moment Marley and I'm off up to the 'sprint' in Ramsey next Tuesday, hopefully I'll get some pics of the older generation of bikes. :)

Beach at Jurby? The only beaches that I can think of that's accessible near there are either Blue Point or Smeale.

It is a great place to live but it's changed a lot since you were here. Could do with less rain though. :heehee:

I am sure it has changed allot now, one reason why I toy with the idea of returning, but so far have not done so..

Ooh going to the sprints eh, be sure to get some lovely pics then, see if you can wet my appetite to come next year..!!!
This is Jurby beach as I know it Sheal..

The island has been ruined, particularly Peel by the building of hundreds of identical houses, flat packs I call them.

Yes, I'll be going to the sprint, weather permitting and the forecast is not looking good at the moment.

I checked out your link. I think the beach shown is what we know as Blue Point. The instructions say it is in the far north east corner, but it's actually in the north west, but not at the top of the island. I've been to Jurby Junk a few times just to show visitors around, but don't normally go there if I can help it. I feel as if my skin's crawling when I come out. :heehee:

Definitely on the west coast & now you mention it I think it did have a proper name but we all always just called it Jurby beach.. I just love the peace of it in those days then as wouldn't see another soul most of the time... That is such a shame that progress has caught up with the island then... Spent many an hr at Peel too.. Ho hum then..
:loll: I know just what you mean about Jurby Junk, as that is what it is really i always thought.. We used to have a comp between us all as to who spotted the most obscure item..! :heehee: Fingers crossed for Thursday then, but you are right weather not looking too clever at present.. Let me know what you saw..

Up on the course (the Mountain road) today I took a chance and diced with death on the road to get some pictures on the way down into Ramsey. It's such a risky place to be at the best of times and as you can see the bikers that visit have no regard for the white lines on the road, even when they're doing speeds of 100mph plus.
