I heard their nonsense first hand - a friend's daughter recently went to one of these places offering service and MOT for silly money (oh, and a free re-test was mentioned on their advert too, not that they were pre-empting anything); long story short, they did the service and then called to say that it wasn't going to pass the MOT and needed work including a fault with the tail lights, suspension shot and needing discs and pads.

Suffice to say, she rang her dad who told her to bring it home without getting the work done, and take it from there - we found a bad earth on the rear nearside light cluster (easy fix), but the suspension and the brakes were fully serviceable. Her dad presented the car at another MOT station a couple of days later and it passed without as much as an advisory.

He did go back to the fast fit place, and had a word about them stating that work was needing to be done when it wasn't necessary, but they weren't interested.

He should have done, but to be honest I think he was more interested in giving them a piece of his mind.

As someone who hates messing around with cars, lets face it, they are made for driving not ripping apart every weekend, and struggling to start every Monday morning, I do get my car serviced regularly at a main dealer.
I know I'm probably getting ripped off, but we get ripped off for everything these days.
At least I get a bit of comeback should anything fail that they have reputedly fixed or if they say it need fixing and I dont bother, I have myself to blame.

I recently had to have my car towed to the garage late at night because of an incident involving pot hole damage, they sorted it out for me the following day, (Saturday), which I was grateful for, so was back on the road Sunday.
Not sure they would have jumped had I not been a regular.

My experience has been of (new) cars needing very little doing for ages. That definitely was not the case in the old days. We've been keeping cars, from new, for 7 years or so and 100,000 miles or more, only serviced at the regular intervals (which are a lot further apart than they used to be) and even towards the end of that period the "extra items" that have been needed are almost negligible. The costs of service are high, for what they do, but not compared to what they used to have to do - which would be unaffordable today!

But goodness knows what will happen as these cars move down the ownership chain ... I can't see that there will be any weekend-tinkering the things are so complex under the bonnet and the repair bills, when they start to arrive, will be horrific. What are people on a very tight budget going to be able to afford to drive I wonder?

I'm with Kristen on this :blue thumb:. I usually buy new and keep the car for about ten years (over 100,000 miles).

I have it serviced by our local, small, garage once a year (according to the book). This is much less frequent than cars used to need servicing so tend to work out cheaper, overall.

They give a superb service at a price that is considerably less than the Main Dealer and use manufacturer's parts. They have the computer software for full diagnosis and keeping that updated for each manufacturer costs quite a bit.

My last service, including MOT, was £223.11 and I think that's good value for money. If anything happens between services that fix it straight away and, if it's a very minor thing, they don't charge - such as replacing a light bulb etc. They keep busy all the time and good luck to them! :)
