I'd better continue to watch this thread. We've just started decking out the area near my g.house. (Had to stop for 3 days this week cos the ground was frozen solid but we should be able to do a bit today.) I need ideas like T.H.. I have plenty of baby palms, cycads, cordys etc. but need a temporary solution of larger plants. I suppose I could split a pampas from another area - hadn't thought of that. I'm sure it will re-establish very quickly.

    This is the area originally

And we start on the frame for the decking

That is my mate, the one who does all the hard work, in the photo, not me.

Lokks like a lot of work  . If you are going to split a well established pampas it can be extremely dificult because they root so well, and you will need to cut it right down (no problem doing that) so that you don't get ripped to pieces.

    Good luck [IMG]

    Hi All

    Thanks for all the relpies.

tried the Palm Centre at Kew for a large pampas but no joy. Cant find a large one anywhere. Anyone else got any ideas where to get one in middx/london or nearish. Even tried ebaY.

Unbelievably my neighbour who had one has just taken it out and chpped off all the plumes so cant even get a bit of that.

    Really want one now!!!!

Would also reccomend leaving the Pampas Grass in the garden centre - there are plenty up this way on the A30. Better in my opinion to use something like Miscanthus or one of the Stipas - they do not speard as much.
Not having any decking area am unable to comment on other choices but agree that 'architectural' should look good plants like the Cordylines and Agave, etc.

    Hi all

    Still looking for pampas !!.

We are putting trellis up on that back wall as I type, any ideas what to put on the back wall to the left of the pear tree and to the right of the corner. Super quick growing if poss. I will be looking to buy a very mature climber/shrub - hopefully easier than the pampas.

Wow. We finished for today. Decking coming next week but my mate is working away and he is the expert at this so it won't be laid for a couple of weeks. But I can start getting the borders ready. Dee what do you mean family? If you think I am letting my youngest grandson near the g.house you must be mad after he 'mended' my antique clock with super-glue. :D

How about an Echium pininana (Tower of Jewels) T.H. It's a biennial but once started should self seed and grows huge. I'm afraid I am against 'instant' gardening, I don't think it works properly. You should look for something quick certainly but impatience is not a trait of gardeners, even impatient me grows from seed where possible (and not because I am cheap).

I'll look that one up thanks.

I would love to grow from seed and spend time etc on sorting out plants. Unfortunately I'm in London and we are extremely busy. I have had a horrendous 6 months with an extension being built and want a decent garden ready for the summer so we can relax and de-stress.

My instant gardens cant be too bad as I designed and built one in our last house from scratch , very very modern - so not everyones taste. Everyone said it looked fantastic and we had so many passers by peering over walls admiring it that I held 2 open days for charity.

Still hunting mature plants so back to the drawing board.

    Thanks to all
