    :D :D

    Stu,

What type of palm is the one in the centre of this pic ?

The reason I ask, I have been to look at a garage door job today, that the builders have bought to renovate, and they have 4-5 of them, and I probably could not get my arms around the base  ...... and they are going to cut them off at the base  :( ..... I am thinking of asking if I can remove them for them :D , as it seems such a waste.

    Have spade, will dig :D

Pheonix palm mate. They sell for a fortune at that size but they have a pretty good tap root. Have a go, worst you can do is kill it, and they will do that anyway ! Best thing to do is dig round it and try and rock it out while fork lifting the base. Also take a metal pole and block or something to lever it if necessary. what would be really good is dig round it, tie underneath the crown and rope it to your mishibishi. Once up you need to get it planted quick. :D  :D

Get underneath it and sever the tap if you can.

In my experience you can cut back palm roots quite severely, it will stop growth for a couple of years maybe, but still survive I reckon.

The tap root of a plant is it's food store and anchorage point, so cutting it off very short isn't likely to be good for it, but cutting a bit off it isn't likely to kill it - unless it's rather sensitive. I'd be more concerned about damaging too many of the fibrous root hairs that the plant takes up water and nutrients through....

As you know I'm not one to cause an argument. :D
But, I say palms dont have tap roots as such, they do have very strong thick roots.
But new roots grow fron the root base very easily and naturally.
I think its something to do with being a monocot.

    Of course not, Pete! :D

I've no idea whether they have tap roots or not - just giving everyone the benefit of my useful fount of knowledge!!

    Certainly if it's a monocot, it won't have a tap-root. I hadn't thought much about it......

I know when I was planting a few trachycarpus plants last year I was struck by how thick the roots were - definitely not tap-root type.

For anyone who's fascinated by the differences between monocots and dicots (and aren't we all  ) here's

a link to pics to show the differences.....

In parts of the USA its common practice (with special equipment) to transplant palms with 20 ft or more of trunk.
    And it works.

Just to keep on topic, I think peonies are monocots as well.

Surely not, Pete? I mean, the leaves aren't monocot type, are they? They don't have parallel veins?

Back to the usual Pete and Dendy friendly discussion!! :D Please join in, everyone else! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
