Hi,MF! I like the pink Crown of Thorns but won't have one because of the thorns ... cats and all! The flower of Pete's Jatropha reminded me of it but the leaves are so different I wasn't sure.

You may have read as well that the seeds were once used as a purgative! Like the Ricinus communis (Castor Oil Plant) ... but they're all the Euphorbia family. These latter ones grow huge and wild here ... a lot near Porches!

The chilopsis is deciduous, probably even with you, L of L.
    The jatropha is evergreen.
When I saw the seed I expected a castor oil plant to come up, when they are ripe if anybody wants a couple they can have them. Apparently the pods are explosive.

Hi Pete, I would love a seed or 2. I am trying to get some plants that will interest my 8 year old grandson as well as me, and strange shapes and explosive seeds definitely qualify!

It appears that Jatropha is a very valuable plant in India and Africa providing biofuel and income in rural areas as well as keeping soil erosion under control.

Could I grow this in a pot, Pete? :D :D

    Yes, I'am. :D
Wont stop much soil erosion in a pot though. :D
Liz, I'll try and remember, should be able to, If I dont, give me a reminder in a month or so and I'll let you know how they're doing.

Remember this one, who showed up on the allotment one evening a couple of months ago, well I've been feeding her ever since, but she seemed to be deteriorating, so I took her to the vet tuesday.
They rang up today to say that she wouldn't eat and it was due to a tumour in her throat.
So she was put to sleep this afternoon.
A shame really as it was the friendliest cat I've come across. :(

:( Aaww Pete..!!!.. That is so sad, yet so lovely that she came to you & you helped her....!! She must have sensed it.... [IMG] Cats are very strange animals, sometimes they know it is "their time" & will take themselves off to die... :( So nice of you to take care of her like that Pete... I am sure you miss her even though she wasn't yours... :(
