    Example

A £25 a month contract for mobile phone, texts, data and calls on a 24 month contract costs £600.

3GB of data on a SIM only for £10 per month with unlimited texts and calls is £240 which leaves you £360 to buy a phone outright. Any less than £360 and your making a saving.

If you also let your contract over-run, anything over and above the monthly sim only cost is effectively being given away to the network for nothing.

Had a similar issue with my work mobile so I had to transfer pics via an FTP. I have now bought a new phone to USB cable and it works fine.

      FTP is an acronym :wallbanging:

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and, as the name implies, it is a way of transferring files between computers. It is also one of those wonderful computer terms that's both a noun and a verb. As a noun, FTP is the name for a method of sending files, but also the name of the program that actually sends the files.

@pete I would probably buy a new USB to phone cable and the issue you have with your computer not seeing your mobile will probably be resolved. It sorted my problem out :snorky:

I dont think its worth it, if I cancelled my contract with Vodafone, would the actual phone still work, memory etc.
In other words could I still get to see the pictures even if the phone was not connected to a network.

Yes. If the sim is cancelled as well then you won’t get calls, texts or network data but you could use WiFi for data.

Your photos and anything in the memory remain.

If you want to get a pay and go sim from another network you must ensure that this phone isn’t locked to Vodafone. They may unlock it for free as contract has ended but if they don’t you can purchase an unlock code for around £10-15 which then means you can use any SIM card in it.

I have an o2 12 month pay and go sim ( used to be called simplicity sim) I get 600 mins unlimited texts and 10gb data for £20. This would be cheaper if you don’t need the same amounts.

I found the 12 month ones better value and they like that you’re tied in for 12 months. There are monthly rolling ones too which you may prefer.

It can be confusing as there are soooo many plans available.

I like data, lots of data. :rolleyespink:

Tip. Always get a little more than you need when on pay and go (or a contract) as the charges for going over any allowances hurt the purse.

Thanks for all the info, I'm trying to take it all in.
I'm probably going to go to a shop to get a new phone and contract with another company.
But its nice to know a bit in advance about what is available and how it all works.

I look inline but often the jargon just confuses me.

A problem with a lot of cheap and mid range phones is that they don’t have a lot of memory/RAM which causes issues for photo storage and installing system updates etc.

Consider a phone that also has sd card storage and tweak setting so that all photos go on the Sd card rather than internal storage. This way you can also easily swap sd cards between phones too.

The sd card should also be recognised on you pc as a drive like F Drive or similar.

iPhones don’t have sd card storage.

Thats interesting, the phone I have now has a space for an SD card but I've never used one with it, wished I had now.
