They should ban Pot Noodles too

I passed a white van man who was hogging the middle lane, he was steering with his elbows, whilst using his hands to pour a kettle of water from one hand into the Pot Noodle in the other ?

The new law is yet another farce.

It has been proven in independent studies that using a phone while driving is actually more dangerous than being over the drink drive limit.

It's more dangerous than being marginally over the limit. It's also far harder to prove. Therefore the penalty should be at least as severe as for drink driving. Ie significant fine, and ban in most circumstances, with possible jail term.

It seems to me that if you want to kill someone, do it using a car. Get steaming drunk, then do 90mph down a residential street while arguing with someone on the phone, kill some innocent bystander, and get locked up for maybe 2 years.

The penalties for reckless moronic stupidity behind the wheel are just laughable. Until fairly recently you'd get a bigger fine for being 10 minutes late back to the car park than for gabbing on the phone while attempting to negotiate a complex and busy town centre junction.

In my opinion, anyone using a phone while driving should be treated the same as a drink driver.

Yeah but its strange that they can convict so many for drink driving, but bearing in mind we all see phone use every day, there are so many still doing it.

Most phone users in cars (that I have seen) aren't holding it, it is on their lap, you can see their heads bobbing up and down.
Ban the bl**dy phones and then people might talk to each other again.

But drink drivers are easier to catch and convict.

If you're driving along and you see a spot check point set up like you see at Christmas time, if you're over the limit, you're stuffed. You can't simply drop your alcohol into the footwell. You can't say the alcohol is in your passenger's blood and not yours.

Whereas with a phone, they have to catch you red handed. Even if they got the necessary court order to retrieve your phone records, if there's a passenger in the car at the time you can just say they were on your phone.

With an offence as dangerous as drink driving, yet far harder to prove, deterrent becomes more important. That's why I think the minority that get caught need to be made an example of.

Agree @clueless1 , but also my point is that most modern cars have far too many buttons that are too small.
Tuning the radio is just as distracting as texting these days.
It used to be just a case of turning a knob until you found the station you wanted

"Hands free", joke, I find is pretty distracting just finding the right tiny buttons to press to answer a call is distracting, it's not necessarily about the conversation, if it was that then you would need to ban passengers talking.

The Phone is just another extension to add to sat nav and all the other gizmos cars have these days, all intended to be used while moving.

I have to disagree clueless. You only have to press a couple of buttons to find out when the phone was last used.

But that doesn't tell you who used it. I regularly ask my wife to make or take calls for me, on my phone, while I'm driving.

Sorry @daitheplant , as clueless says it makes no difference proving when a phone was used if there's more than one person in the car.
