Going from a 4.1 MP S80 from 2005, you are going to find a vast difference - not only because of the increased resolution, but also in terms of the image processing technology, things have moved on a LOT in the past decade.

A quick question re the photo competition....

As I remember, no alteration to original photo is permitted, other than cropping, or adding a border. Is this still the case?

I have recently started using a basic white balancer app, for my ink drawings. When submitting my two photos for the February competition, I found myself instinctively reaching for the white balancer, to get the snow, well, white! The snow didn't start to settle until 4pm, so by the time I had enough for the effect I was aiming for, light levels were low. With temperatures hovering around zero, it was far too cold to mess with the SLR. More a case of a quick point-and-shoot with the phone, before setting to the main task of shovelling the snow off the drive, so hubby could come home.

Am I correct in where the rules currently stand? Or can I do a simple white balance adjustment?

            TIA!

All entries images to remain without any enhancement of the content ,and remain the same images as when they were taken .

                My personal opinnion
Good evening @Sian in Belgium it is my interpretation of above statement is that altering the White Balance is enhancing the image,so I would say that this is not allowed.

Ps I would like to hear what other members think and any suggestion would be most

                welcome.

Ps. @"M" My own personal view is that cropping is enhancing the image so that would be not allowed.

Cropping: Enhance Focus & Composition. image There's no easier way to completely transform a photo than by cropping it. Cropping can remove unwanted or distracting areas, improve the composition, or help emphasize a focal point.

Apologies.... I didn't double-check the current rules before posting. I will withdraw one entry, as I could not x[crop] "correctly frame" the image in my smart-phone screen-view in sub-zero conditions. I must admit, i think that cropping is one of the playing-field levellers between the different image-takers. It allows people to compensate for the limitations of the "camera", with their interpretation...

@wiseowl - thank you for clarifying my thoughts  I have neglected to submit entries on the basis they had been cropped (altered?), so I am most appreciative of the clarification; which means I was right not to include them. :dbgrtmb:

As an aside (not a critique!): I have noted that some of my images would be excluded, due to the image size (not cropping!) in megapixels?
So: my query remains; if we need to "resize" an image from X megapixels to Z megapixels to meet the requirement of general GC photo acceptance, how does that equate to "acceptance" within the terms of the photo competitions?
E.G.: If a take an image, which is X amount in megapixels and I then "reduce" the size of that image (by conversion) to within the parameters of the GC photo "allowance" but to not alter it in any other way (either by enhancement/cropping), does it still fit within the rules? :dunno:

For example, in the Autumn, I took a photograph of a Wood pigeon - nothing fancy; nothing "shopped". I received a PM from a fellow member suggesting I might enter it for the photo competition. However, my integrity begged me to refuse on the basis that I had "reduced" the size of the photo (the original size was not within the parameters of the GC photo upload limit) and then I waffled on that I had "cropped" the image to make it up loadable (I hadn't, but I felt embarrassed that I had needed to "resize" it and had my "resize" confused with my "crop" and my pride got in the way of asking the difference).

For the record of those who like to stick the boot in: I AM NOT CRITIQUING ANY INDIVIDUAL: FULL AND FINAL JUDGEMENTS ARE ACCEPTEDE. ERGO: I ACCEPT WOO's JUDGEMENT AS FULL AND FINAL. NO need to jump to any perceived offence!

I AM MERELY ASKING QUESTION FOR CLARIFICATION!!!

Anyone with ANY issue with my above statement, please, do not answer within this thread :nonofinger: (keep it on topic) and raise any queries in site feedback! This is NOT a critique of Woo, the competitions, the entrants, the perspective of entrants, the judgement of entrants nor a free-for-all "M" bashing!!! :nonofinger: :nonofinger: :nonofinger:

I'm as entitled as any other member to ask a legitimate query :snooty:
You do not have to like it; but forum rules dictate you have to RESPECT it!

My personal view of that @"M" is that resizing the image to comply with the size restrictions of the site is NOT altering the image - the image itself will still look as it was taken, only slightly smaller.

I don't participate in the photo competitions but personally don't see any issues with cropping and resizing, anyone using a APS-C camera with a full frame lens would have a crop advantage over a full frame body and lens, allowing cropping evens this advantage out.

This is what im talking about for anyone who is scratching there head :),

Both shots was taken with the same lens, no shot is cropped, look at the advantage of the APS-C, IMHO if cropping is not allowed APS-C cameras should be excluded from using full frame lenses, this is only my opinion of course.

I've still got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ7 which I had for many years.
But last year I bought a Lumix TZ60, Leica lens, HD 1080p, 18.1MP, 30x Optical Zoom, Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS & GLONASS, EVF, 3” Screen, many applications which I don't use, but with the videos it takes, you can use zoom. I couldn't with the old camera.
I used it to take through the glass of our French windows, the videos of the fox cubs I've uploaded.

Other than that, I just take "snaps."
