I'm amazed there's so many varieties. It was only a few days ago that my wife noticed the other pink flowered tree in the village beside the police station (that's not a typo, some villages still have them).

Neither tree produces conkers to my knowledge, but when I was of conker playing age (I still can't resist picking up a decent specimen!) there was a very large local tree that most people thought was barren, but that was because it only produced up to half a dozen giant (60mm dia.) conkers every year, and those in the know checked it out every day and would remove the empty cases so others wouldn't find out.

It now has a lottery grant Marley and in the next few years they hope to restore the place to how it used to look.
The big house has been sold and will be converted to a retirement village, not sure I like the new housing being built though.

But at least its now getting looked after, after years of neglect.:)

I planted a "dwarf" horse chestnut in my old garden; it has pink/purple flowers with a yellow centre, dull green leaves and after many many years it only reached 4/5ft in height and about 6ft spread, the 'chestnuts' got to about the size of a hazlenut but then usually dropped off. A lovely 'shrub'.......just can't remember the variety, any ideas?
