What I've done in one of my large containers is planted a hardy fuchsia deeply and then filled it with bluebells. This way you have spring/summer and autumn interest. Also having the bulbs above the fuchsia gives a little more frost protection for the winter. Don't use a cheap plastic container though as these offer no protection at all.

Fern wise, try Dryopteris affinis ‘Cristata’ aka "The King", its a nice big, strong evergreen fern. I cut back the old fronds in spring otherwise they can look a bit tatty.

Also, Dryopteris are good for pots as they dont mind drier conditions which is why they are called DRYopteris.

GC members have given lots of ideas already :blue thumb:. I really like pale coloured fuchsias in the shade as they brighten up what can be a gloomy area. Also white flowers are nice.....some hardy geraniums grow well in shade. I've got Geranium Sanguineum Album in a container which has done well.

Hawkshead is a brilliant choice as it's the only white fuchsia that really does stay white, it doesn't go pink at all, and it seems to sparkle in the shade.
