Please Tell Me This Is Basil!!!!

My Basil starts smelling of basil by the time the second set of leaves appear.

 

My basil is not deeply veined like that. That looks like oregano or margoram?

 

margoram leaves are a bit thicker and also have a spoon effect to them. . plus oregano leaves have like a feathery edge to them, so wouldnt say it was either. defo basil

 

waft your hands through the leaves and smell it.

 

I will have a feel and waft this afternoon, I have a poor sense of smell but I will see, if they don't smell of anything would this mean they are just weeds?

 

I had rubbed the leaves, there is no smell, I have just realised that they are sweet basil, would this make a difference to whether the smell?

 

No, shouldn't do. I think the smell is the same.

 

My basil definitely starts to have a good smell by the time the true leaves appear. Rub one of the leaves between your fingers, I would say that if it doesn't have any odour it's not basil!

There are many different types of basil by the way, I grew a type called 'greek basil' when I lived in Spain and it had the more pointy leaves that yours seems to have (common basil has slightly rounder tip to the leaves I think).

Some types of basil have a more aniseedy flavour (like the licorice you mentioned) especially Thai basil. There's some good info here:
