£200! That's a fortune! That would have paid for over 1 and 2/3rds of our new bookcases! All of our bookcases were made with real wood shelves and a plywood outer shell/wall/box to hold the shelves in place. Most people think real wood is always more expensive, but when you think about the amount of work that goes into making MDF and plywood then the costs usually outweigh the real thing.

Just find your local good timber merchant and get some quotes if you don't believe me.

Pffft those things are pretty feeble imo. Especially if you are going to be making the shelves out of MDF.

Here's how we mounted our bookshelves. These are made from two lengths of 2x1 with teeth cut in and the supports then slot right in. These are also fully adjustable and when we were happy with the position of the shelves screwed them into place. The supports (we call them spacers) where then screwed into the plywood wall. This idea has been used for yonks, well before the days of MDF and Ikea came along.

I'm not suggesting you do this idea but you could do something similar but without the shelves being adjustable, but you would have a lot more strength as a result.

Same. We should all be supporting our local businesses anyway.

The supports are as good as the material they're fitted into. A good solution for a time sensitive project.

Nice, but time is JWKs issue here.

Hi Jane, yes I did get quotes at the time, and again I would have had the issue of laminating real wood (as you did) to get the 3ft depth. I needed 16 sq meters which was 6 sheets of 6x4 MDF. It's not that cheap stuff from B&Q, it's Moisture Resistant (MR) grade, which is a bit more expensive. We painted it in a high gloss, so what's underneath doesn't really matter provided it supports the weight. Maybe your timber merchant is a bit cheaper than mine.

I've started putting together a spreadsheet for costing up this new project and MDF is coming out as cheapest by a country mile :)

This is what it is all about these days, our local skips used to be piled up with unwanted kitchen units, most in perfect condition. :dunno:

Does seem a shame throwing out good stuff. I've seen them come up on ebay when I was replacing my kitchen in case there were any local bargains.

I know a kitchen fitter. Quite often people move into new builds and get the kitchen (and bathroom) redone straight away. I've refitted several rentals out over the years using these cast offs.

So did @JWK ever build his bookcases in the end?

Over Christmas I got side tracked with another project instead. Stripping out our old kitchen and turning it into a study.

                  BEFORE

                  AFTER

All the old kitchen units now gone, plumbing and redundant electrics stripped out and a shelving system from Ikea put up, this will be Mrs JWK's craft working area:

                  20150111-P1110033 Stitch.jpg

... and at the other end, moved my desk so I can work in here too:
                  20150111-P1110035.jpg

There are still a few things to finish off, hang a few pictures about, and get rid of the random freestanding cabinets, they need emptying and contents storing on the shelving system.

Here's the area where my new bookcase will go, as you can see my desk was in the way, so I thought it best to sort out our new study first. It's been a juggling act over Christmas as I didn't want to have too much of a mess in our main living area, we had a big family party yesterday and kept the decorations up till then :)

                    20150111-P1110170.jpg

Now at least the area is clear and I can measure up properly.

I'll keep you posted, don't hold your breath, progress will be slow for a few weeks.
