Just finished our bookcases the day after New Years Day. I'm really pleased with them too. (Still need to add some coving on the top when the rest of the room is done though)

I'm waiting in for delivery of the wood this morning. I've bought a cheap Silverline biscuit jointer, it looks good enough for the job though.

@pete I understand not using the fence as it can wobble and move. So I want to work from the base. However the wood thickness I've got is 26mm and the jointer base to middle of blade is set at 10mm. So I'm 3mm out for centre cuts, I hope that makes sense - should I worry? I'm thinking of getting 3mm ply to put under the tool like this:

I tend to try to work off the base of the machine when possible @JWK .

I usually pack it up as you describe.:)

I rarely worry if its only slightly off centre though, just keep the larger bit to the top if that makes sense.

ie. apart from when cutting for the biscuits on the top, you work from the bottom all the time.

Here's the wood, cut to a very high standard:

I've had a practice with the biscuit joiner, made a jig out of scrap MDF. Now I can clamp each piece in turn and cut the slots in the same position:

Here's where the shelves are going:

I didn't bother with the ply packing in the end, it was just another thing to get wrong. I can't afford any mistakes as I bought the exact amount of wood. Wish I'd ordered a couple of spare shelves for insurance now.

Looking good John ! Very pro approach to the shelves , + amazingly tidy ! :dbgrtmb:
We were talking about biscuit joints at work this week . What is their advantage over a splined dowel ?

If you should do it wrong John, you just glue a biscuit in, flush it down, and re cut.
