My mother was a nurse in a casualty unit and I can confirm what Marley says, there were many cases she had to deal with over the years (not fatal) of kiddies eating nasty plants. Also it's worth taking extra care if you're pregnant, green potatoes are bad for the Mum but very bad for the developing baby. I do remember that case of the man saving up a cupful of apple seeds and killing himself by eating them all in one go (as Ziggy said above).

When we moved into our house I yanked out two nice Laburnum trees as our kids were toddlers, the seed pods are very attractive to children although apparenetly very bitter so it's unlikely they would have eaten enough to poison them, but you never know what kids get up to on their own.

      Hey Penny,

Thought i'd mentioned it before, i'm my own worst enemy. That 2mm tip of a foxglove leaf kept me up all night with palpitations too.

I'm sure if your neighbour is still alive, then she knows what shes picking.

      Hey John,

I stopped my best mate eating laburnum seeds in the school playground when we were 10 ( Yep, been into botany a long time ).

He later nicked my girlfriend when we were 18, like you say, can't trust Guilfordians.

Didn't know that about solanine, cheers for that info.

I think we are just proving the old saying, "If you dont know what it is, DONT EAT IT".

And even if you normally eat one part of a plant, it don't mean the rest is OK to eat.

I think the trick with Mushrooms (in the UK) is to learn to recognise the very small number that will kill you - and then pick anything not on the list.

        But I'm chicken ...
