Update on the missing spuds. In spite of them being well chitted, they seem to have just rotted, some had roots, but the shoots were either rotten or missing completely. One of my plot neighbours was asking what I was looking for, when I explained, he said "oh look at mine" His had even more missing than me.
When I was digging the ground is still very wet and sticky underneath., so I have left the trenches open to dry out a bit. We have some supermarket first earlies sprouting so I'll pinch some and fill the gaps.
    Don't tell the missus

Planted 1/2 a dozen Annabelle first early to fill the gaps in the row. We'll see if they can do anything. :fingers crossed:

Had my first potatoes of the year over the weekend.

I found a random potato in the greenhouse at the beginning of the year and planted it into a large container and kept it in the greenhouse. I had a feel around in the compost on Saturday and was happy to find some potatoes. Pulled them up and had them for dinner.

          Morning all.

Yesterday I finished with earthing up second potatoes field. One more to go, but it will wait till tomorrow. Last few days is hot, and I'm a bit exhausted. The crop should be excellent this year.

@CarolineL, I have small machine and can do a lot with it. Still, some work I like to do with hands and hoe.

Tried an outside plant, 5 small new potatoes from it and the large seed potato was still really firm

I generally find that it's not worth trying to harvest before they have flowered, whichever variety, early or late.

I noticed today that there are flowers on some of the Foremost first early spuds, so if I leave another couple of weeks, then they will be just about on schedule in spite of the late start. Some more sun and heat would help them even more.

My Pink fir apples are flowering but wont be ready until September, so I dont think flowering signifies much to be honest.

When were they planted ? Reckoned to take 125-140 days to maturity (skin set )
Could be used (but not stored) after 70days, as 'new' potatoes, but with diminished crop.

Oooh, cant remember, early April I think but have been very slow up until recently, I would doubt there is anything at all under them yet, they are in big pots.
I want them as maincrop anyway, so not really bothered, just thought the flowering was worth a mention.

We've been away for a couple of days and found the leaves on some if our flowering Charlotte 2nd earliest look like this today? Cause for concern? Advice welcome. We haven't had blight before. 20240612_193536.jpg
