Buster Keaton and Winston Churchill, would have been a good comedy team.:)

Never grown either before, something my late Dad used to do every year, grow something new for a surprise.

A friend gave me some sprouted purple potatoes. Wierd! Put them in a pot but gosh its dry here, everything needs a soak. Anyone grown these before?

I've seen them growing but not myself, I think there are a few different varieties that are purple or almost black.

Not grown purple potatoes but did grow purple peas once, the colour comes out during cooking. Expect potatoes do the same.

First potatoes showing, a friend gave me these four 'Jersey Royals'.
I'm keeping a weather eye for any frost.
Interestingly, we have two holidays arranged for Jersey this year.
First one is fly to Guernsey for three days then ferry to Jersey; then fly back to Liverpool.
Second trip is a week in Jersey, flying from Liverpool.

Well done, but you mustn't call them by that name! They are 'International ' potatoes when in Wigan , only Jersey Royals when grown in Jersey. (Protected Designation of Origin regulations...).

As a matter of interest, were they sourced from potatoes sold here or 'smuggled in' ? Will be interested to discover whether they have the characteristic texture/flavour or whether growing at a more northerly site changes by longer period of growth/sunlight/season etc.

                  Mea Maxima Culpa.
I will advise of the flavour one hour after harvesting.
I will be applying liquid seaweed as well as other plant feed.

                    @glosmike
It's a little known fact that Wigan is on the Gulf Stream.
It comes directly along the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

In England the traditional day for planting seed potatoes is 17th March.

My Charlottes are in! Found an old recycling box, so I hope that’s enough room for them.

I was rash and put my Anya out a few weeks ago. They've already had to have more muck/compost to cover the shoots and are showing through again. Fortunately they're in those soft 30l bags with handles so can be moved somewhere sheltered if frost coming

Well I’m tempted to plant mine today even though the “chits” are short …. They’ve been on the bedroom windowsill for weeks !
