The original is usually all mushy by harvest time. I've come across originals that are hard as a bullet too, don't think they would cook very well.

The mother seed tuber puts it's stored energy into producing the new plant and usually become a soggy smelly mess, you wouldn't want to eat one :blue thumb:

I think @clueless1 described it as foul or evil, indicating he might have accidentally eaten one???

You'll never even guess what entered my head when I saw this comment before looking at the wider context:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

But no, I've never eaten one, but I've put my hand through a few.

Ok, I want to start chitting today but when I took the tatties out of the box, they already have shoots sprouting out, about 2cm long. Should I carry on with them from here or break them off and start again?

I would knock them off, 2cm is a lot, and may well get bust off when you plant them (they will be longer by then).

Opinions vary, but my opinion is to chit them from the moment they arrive, rather than to try to store them, which avoids them already having shoots when you do come to chit them.

Don't worry about it. I start mine chitting right away, but plenty of people will tell you that they store them, and rub the shoots off so that the tubers make new chits from scratch. I think it wastes energy in the tubers, but if I was right folk would have figured that out by now and no one would store and rub-out ... so, at best, it can only be an infinitesimally small margin of difference!

Thanks! I've got them sitting on the kitchen windowsill now. My hubby is all like "what IS that?" hahaha!

Chitting them on the windowsill and then plenty of manure on them in the ground - I'm sure he'll understand how that makes them much more tasty :heehee:

Kings sent me Arran Pilot (which I had already bought elsewhere) instead of Pink Fir Apple. They said "Unfortunately we have had a misprint in our catalogue this year with 2 varieties, Pink fir apple and Arran Pilot having the same code number" and they have now sold out of P.F.A. and are offering to substitute with Anya (which we quite like, but its still second-choice).

A catalogue printing error I can understand ... but I bought online and I have no idea how an E-commerce website allows two products with the same code - I'm a database Jock and build eCommerce sites for a living and what with referential integrity, normalisation, primary keys and all that - I don't see how it would be possible to enter two products with the same code. Given that it happened you'd think they would e-mail all customers to ask for clarification. Anyone got a printed Kings catalogue who can check the product codes so I know it isn't just a fob-off? First time I have bought from Kings, and lots of people have told me how good they are, so I'd like to know this is genuine muck-up, rather than fob-off.
