I have a very small garden Fancy - so every square foot has to work hard. The Lupins thing was sparked off by Christopher Lloyd, who gardened pretty intensively. He said that he replanted some areas up to three or even four times a year. His argument was that people visited his garden over a long season, paying money to do so. So they were entitled to see a good display.

CL used to sow Lupins and other annuals and biennials in the autumn to produce an early display and then replace them by later flowering plants such as Dahlias etc. It was also a way of changing the display from one year to the next, to maintain his own interest as well.
