You don't want them to flower :rolleyespink:, If they start to produce the flower head you need to cut it off.

It is best if you can wait until the stems start shrivelling and going brown. It means the extra goodness in the stem has gone down to the onion and helps it to last longer if storing. In the very wet weather just keep an eye out for rot or fungi.

Have you tried Banana Shallots Dai, or anyone?

      Are they really mild?

I've always gone along with the assumption that every leaf that the onion makes during its growing period creates another ring in the final bulb.

Bearing that in mind, you need to keep the vegetative growth going as long as possible to get large onions, but at some point you need to call a halt to growing and allow the plant to die back naturally.

The shorter days and dry soil, (joke), help this process.

I've got them growing next to the onions, i'm too scared to pick them now though:OUCH:

Wasn't a fantastic germination rate, probably only got 10 out of the whole packet.

I`ve grown and used them for the past couple of years Pete. They have a less stringent flavour than onions, milder.:dbgrtmb: I would say they would do well in salads, though I am NOT a salad person. Another veg I would recommend for salads is Kohl Rabi. It has such a refreshing taste, superb.
