Crashing here at a later date, and just a suggestion, but it always helps with ID if you can nail down the family that it belongs to.
I cant work out the size of the flowers but the general appearance looks to me like a lilly, its the stamens etc.
    Are they bulbous Kedi?
As you know I dont read many links so if you've aready covered this ground I'll shut up. [IMG]

    Oh, darling Sis ...

Quote ... "Ah, I keep forgetting to tell you, Hubby said that DIL's parents brought this plant back from a holiday in South America, Brazil I think. Don't ask if they brought seeds or a plant as I don't know. Perhaps this will help ID it for sure." End quote.

You've suddenly remembered this ??????????? after these last couple of years of us trying to identify it. ??????????

Pete - you are absolutely right in trying to identify the family. Normally I just look at a plant and see if I recognise it. Is there any systematic way of identifying a plant. Linnaeus put plants into families by their sexual parts, though I understand things are more complicated now. Can you still use that as a method.

Aaaaahhh! - Hubby suddenly popped out with this wee bit of info recently. He used to speak with Hr O more than I did so I probably didn't hear it, or only in passing and then promptly forgot it. Sorry folks!

I'll get out to measure the flowers, leaves and whole plant and take some more pics. Weather very dull today so may have to wait a day or two.

I can remember Hubby asking Hr O for a clipping of it and he saying no, as it was very sensitive and didn't take to being divided. I am not sure if it just has roots, or is a bulb, tuber, corm or whatever. Hubby says he will have a look in the Autumn, not now while it is in full bloom. But it does die back in the winter and sprouts anew in late March.

Peter, I'm not a botanist and I've no real knowledge of how plants are grouped.
All I can say is, that that group of stamens in the centre of the flower appear to be very long and turn up at the ends, I've defintely seen that arrangement in another flower, even the arrangement of the petals looks familliar.
I'm moving away from the lilly idea at the moment.

The flowers and the leaf structure look right to me, pete ... how you ever came up with that is beyond me ... don't say anything! :D

I think we should appoint you ID Man, especially for the unusual! [IMG]

Got a confession to make, I got out the old RHS book on plants and flowers, scanned through perrenials till I found a similar picture then googled dictamnus and the rest is history.
Books are still better than the web for some things. :D

I agree 100% ... if it's not in my head, I go to my books (go back to the 20s), stacks of them, first, then to the net ... [IMG]

Well done Pete - that looks absolutely spot on. I thought that it must be in our books, as it is hardy. But where do you start looking.

Good morning everyone, I've just come on and read the good news - very well done Pete! It makes no difference where you found the info, the main thing is you found it and everything is exactly right this time and we finally have a name for it. I think you should have the honour of giving it a common name for us.

I took a couple of pics of it about 2 hours ago, shall put them up later on. Pics through a window and from further off, looked quite nice set in all the green, hope they turn out.

I'll collect seeds for anyone interested, just let me know.

The colour on the link you gave is exactly right, my pics always seemed too light or pink, but the flowers are darkening now.

    Thanks Pete!

Kedi - I would love some seeds - if that was possible. Not only does it look a lovely plant but it is flowering at this time of the year. On another thread I had said that I had an abundance of plants flowering later in the year, but a shortage of good ones flowering now.

It was a lucky shot really Kedi, but I'm glad you now know what it is.
If I have a plant that I dont know, it nags at me till I find out, so I know how you must have felt especially as its such a good looking plant.
