A real classic fantasy of a film on Channel 81 at 3.20 p.m. today.

"Portrait of Jenny." Starring Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones.

He's a struggling artist in 30s New York, who meets a young girl barely in her teens, played by Jennifer Jones, (she was actually 29 at the time). She's dressed as would be a girl in the 1900s. She talks about her mother and father in the present tense, but with some research he finds that as trapeze artists they died decades before in an accident at a long demolished theatre.
It's a love story. She wants him to wait for her to grow up, he sees her again over a number of months and each time she's several years older. He paints her portrait.
      Sad ending.

Some clips. Wrong tune, but no matter.

Right tune, has become a jazz classic.

If you think you might like to have watched the film, it's on YouTube.

That's right. I think that's why he's not doing anymore. I don't think that he was going to do the finale but viewers wanted a end.

Tim Marlow artistic director of the Royal Academy of Arts, in London, presents a programme on Edouard Manet.

            10.40 p.m. ITV

I like Tim Marlow as an art presenter, no gimmicks, no playing up to the camera, no silly "artistic clothing."

I got home a bit late the other night and they were showing a repeat of the DHR - the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (not Dog House Riley :lunapic 130165696578242 5:). BBC4 - and well worth an hour of your time.:blue thumb:

It's a very interesting programme about the railway that is virtually the centre of life in the region. Individual lives, education, politics, love, life and death of tens of millions of people revolve around the railway.

The DHR is part of the largest employer in India, the railways, with approx. 1.5 million employees. :hate-shocked: In some parts of Darjeeling town we were able to shake hands with some of the residents whilst we were travelling on the train and they were sitting outside their front door!

Working for the DHR is a job for life (as long as you do it properly) and even the lowliest job gives financial security for the worker and family.

The DHR runs in the foothills of the Himalayas up to the 7,000ft plus level.

The museum shows the building of the railway in 1881 and the tough technical problems that thy had to overcome.

              P1260941.JPG

Because of the steepness they had to design into the railway a series of loops where the train went in circles looping up and over itself. The Batasia Loop is the most famous one

              P1260963.JPG

              P1260948.JPG

We had to get off the train whilst it negotiated the loop so it gave us time for photos :)
              P1250523.JPG

Notice the typically British design of the signs.
              P1250519.JPG

Some of the original trains are still running
              P1260914.JPG

              P1250534.JPG

Even the poor people that are not employed by the railway get some benefit from it. When the engine stops at a station they rake out the old burning coals and embers. Women pick through these with bare hands to get some pieces that still have a little life left in them
              P1250538.JPG

The train criss crosses the streets and has priority. I was on the train for this photo.
