I know just how you feel Clare, it isn't just the property programmes, these 'people' are everywhere!! Why doesn't anyone speak properly anymore?!?! it drives me insane, we are surrounded by uneducated, mindless morons who not only can't pronounce words but can't spell them either!!!:wallbang: If I hear one more person say " I fink" I shall throw my TV set out of the window as well!!!:gaagh: Some nights I am literally swearing at the screen :heehee: saying for God's sake pi$$ off and buy a dictionary!!!!! :D

I'm not being classist about this, Val, I think the precious little Sloanes are just as bad.

I bet these programmes are part funded by property developers and/or banks/building societies.

The goal seems to be to make people want to spend more on their new house. For developers, that obviously means more income. For lenders, that means more interest earned, and as if they haven't learnt yet, more bonds to sell.

People do want more these days. Its crazy. Less than two years ago I paid significantly less than £100k for my spacious semi in my home town at the seaside. It was cheap because it is not a trendy area. A friend of mine who until last year qualified as a DINKy household (Double Income No Kids) paid more than twice as much for his pad, which is significantly smaller, further away from the town centre and the beach, stuck off at the back of town away from everything. Difference is, its a new build in a trendy new estate, and his house has an en-suite in the master bedroom, just as people had in the olden days when everyone had a g'zunder.

I suppose my problem with so many of these shows is that there seems to be a total disconnect with reality. There are exceptions, but it's quite rare for them to feature housing at the bottom end of the scale - it doesn't make pretty television, I suppose - and they therefore feed this idea of entitlement. I may be useless, spoilt, lazy and unrealistic but hey! I'm not even going to entertain the idea of taking on a property without an en suite and a state-of-the-art kitchen. You've only got to look at the average wage in the UK to know that this is not how most of us live, but it is what we see on television.

I don't mind shows which feature people getting stuck in and doing things - getting their hands dirty on restoration projects, for example - but I have a big problem with useless lumps just wandering from room to room whining that things aren't good enough. I can't help thinking that, in a different sort of society, natural selection would have weeded these people out long ago.
