I simply use vaseline. It works wonders and stays on the pots for a very long time and continues to work for a very long time too. Regards Fonzie.

In an effort to be more 'green' I try to keep the pellets to a minimum. I have about 8 hostas in pots (a couple being the 'blue' type which the slugs and snails don't seem to be interested in) most of which, in previous years, have looked like lace doylies despite using gravel, broken egg shells, dried and chopped up orange peel, vaseline etc.
BUT I do find that the very best thing that works for me is an extremely obliging husband who goes round the garden with a torch at between ten and 11 each night and picks them off before they have their midnight feast, RESULT: perfect hostas!

I agree, cauliflower ears, that salt is a good deterrant for slugs.

Question - what do I do with the slugs once I have collected them all from the garden ie: when they are still live?

I take it the beer kills them?

I take the snails and slugs on a permanent holiday - anywhere up to a mile away!
