Roslyn; it’s too late to grow from seed so you’ll be at bit of a disadvantage because Steve R sent us all his ‘special’ seed earlier in the year, so we are growing the same variety. But you should be able to find well developed Pumpkin plants in a Garden Centre local to you. It’s not too late to plant now so who knows, yours could catch up and it’s only for a bit of fun. So please do join in, the more the merrier.

In the past the latest I've ever planted pumpkins is by the first week of July and still managed to get a reasonable sized fruit for carving at Halloween.

Roslyn, please pm me your address and I'll post some seed to you asap. You might be a bit behind, but I'll send the seed if you want to try.

Found half a rabbit buried next to the pumpkins this evening, poor thing was my neighbours pet it had escaped a couple of days ago and we couldn't catch it. She's down to three now, they keep escaping in turns and munching on my veg patch. Luckily for me, Mr Fox avoided digging up the pumpkin stalk (not so lucky for the rabbit though).

Hi Steve, that is looking really good, just a quick question; is it usual for no flowers to show yet?, I would have thought it would have started now (not that I'm an expert)?, I have another variety that has been flowering for about 3-4 weeks and has a pumpkin the size of a grapefruit already.

Also the seeds that I got from you for the giants (thanks again :D) have produced some really healthy plants that are a bit behind, they are in 2lt pots and just starting to spread out, they are about to be planted and they have flower buds on too!! :thumb:

As you may know by now, rabbits nibble at young pumpkins (and marrows) and ruin them. If growing them outside of rabbit proof fencing I'll isolate them with a small enclosure of mesh.

They prefer my radishes, which I don't mind losing one or two of. My courgettes are netted but I must admit I hadn't thought about protecting the pumpkins.

            Hi Roslyn,

I've received your name and address but I cannot send you a pm back. I need to check the first line of your name and address as I have never seen a name formatted that way before, I just want to check its not a typo before I post your seeds.

            Many thanks!

            Steve...:)

Well I had 8 cracking pumpkin plants growing away in 2lt pots, all developing flower buds and starting to trail, I did the good samaritin thing and gave some away to like minded gardeners leaving me with 2. I got home today and found one completely snapped off by the wind (it just won't go away this year), so I'm down to 1, the biggest and strongest looking one so that's getting planted in the compost bin tomorrow (as an experiment) before anything happens to that...:thumb:

The best thing was that one of the guys that had a plant; which I offered via freecycle, turned out to be my best mate from when I was about 8-16 years old, we lost touch when he moved away, I hadn't heard from or seen him for 20 years , small world :thumb:

So; "a pumpkin has reunited two old friends!!!" amazing....:D  :thumb:

                Hi all,

a question about pumpkins if I may and apologies if it has been covered before in this thread, I haven't at this moment in time read all through the thread. My pumpkins at my allotment (planted 3) are growing like mad! my question is do I need to curb them in any way or do I just let them grow?
                Many thanks

Hi; if they're in danger of swamping your plot then yes you can cut off the end of runners once it's set the pumpkins that you want. Or at least thats what I did last year and it did the plant no harm what so ever, if anything it put more energy in to swelling the pumpkins :thumb:
