    Thats because the dont have proper planes nowadays, only oversized hair dryers. Where are the Spitfires, Hurricanes, Lancasters that have engines that allow an aircraft to sound the way it should? :dunno:

      Only six miles south of us there's a private airfield (ex WWII airfield) that up to a few years ago had all the old planes flying in shows (Spitfires, Hurricanes etc.) but this was stopped because of the international airport eight miles north of us and it is under part of the flight path.

      Half an hour north of us is an airfield that is part of the Imperial War Museum and they have shows with spitfires etc. They stay north of the international airport and there's no flight path in that direction.

      They have one of their shows on the same weekend as Open Day. Some of our visitors go there first and then on to us.

        No, aircrew and ground crew are the personnel on a Squadron the name Squadron usually in the RAF refers to the aircraft within the Unit. An operational squadron usually consists of 13 aircraft, 12 for operational use and one Trainer.:snorky:

        Not, really, Gail, nearly all Countries call them Squadrons. In the Navy, Army Corps, or Air Forces they're still referred to as Squadrons.:dunno::snorky:

        Well, a "Flight" usually refers to around 5 or 6 aircraft, but the real difference, I guess, is that a Flight is normally a permanent Unit on a Station which consists of several aircraft used for training and other duties, whereas a Squadron is "mobile" and can be moved operationally to any Base.
        So, in the case of the Queen's Flight which solely transports VIP's around, it's now based for convenience at RAF Northolt near enough permanently. It was originally No 32 Squadron but was merged with the Queens Flight but, for historic reasons, is still referred as a Squadron. So it's primary use is for VIP and it can be used for other military duties should the need arise.:snorky:

                I'm none the wiser @Freddy. :doh::) I've been told it's a Hercules, whether that's the same thing I haven't got a clue.

                When it went over my head I could almost touch it. A month later the same plane did the same thing over a dam I was walking on. Quite scary when it's that low.

                    I could be wrong, but it looks like an A400M to me.
                    It’s a military transport plane, made by Airbus.

                      Hi @Freddy

                      There's a difference between Sheal's plane and yours :blue thumb:

                      It looks as though the wings on yours slope downwards slightly from the fuselage whereas Sheal's are level. Also, the horizontal stabiliser on the vertical stabiliser in your picture is on the top whereas it appears to be at the bottom on Sheal's. :)

                        I agree with Shiney, the aircraft appears to be the Hercules 130/130J

                              That's the way of GC Gail, diversifying on a thread often happens. :biggrin:

                              Freddy I get the feeling this plane is privately owned and flown for pleasure. In the pictures above it flew low towards me along the loch and then had to climb steeply as it went over my head and the mountains behind. It then had to bank heavily to the right and disappeared, I honestly thought it was coming down. At the dam in another area it flew exactly the same way coming up the river, low over the dam and banking off again to the right to avoid the high ground in front.

                              Comparing both planes I would say it's much older than the one in your picture and it certainly sounded like it, a heavy low throb as it passed over. To see it twice in a matter of weeks took me by surprise and if I get the chance again I'll take more shots. :) There were no markings/decals on the bodywork.
