When I was at school in Somerset I so well remember seeing Concorde on test flights, such a beauty. Many years later I visited the Scottish aviation museum where a Concorde is exhibited. It was interesting to go inside the aircraft and I was surprised at how small her carrying capability was but so sad that she will never fly again. How interesting @Freddy not many can say they were actually involved in building her. I often wonder if it was jealousy from across the pond which sounded the plane's death knell but I am no authority on the subject.

That museum must have been East Fortune @silu? My first close up encounter was there - also excellent.

PS - there is a good market there on a Sunday....

I can assure you that, after your first flight on a commercial airline, it gets quite boring. Especially when you've been stuck on the same plane for 24 hours! :rolleyespink:

Sadly, commercial is all I am likely to ever get near @shiney - much as I would love even a short a tour in a Lancaster or similar......

So, yeah - one of Boeing or Airbus' finest is on my bucket list.

Don’t be in awe, as I really do consider myself lucky, right time, right place.
As an aside, my dad used to work for Rolls Royce, as a machinist. One of his tasks was to produce parts for the Olympus 593 (Concorde engine), so I have a certain sense of continuity. On the gardening front, he was miles ahead of me, quite inspirational really, a lovely man, sadly missed.

Don't underestimate yourself @Freddy - opportunities present themselves, for sure; taking those opportunities is a whole different ball game.

Rolls Royce, in my humble opinion, remain one of the few bastions of engineering in this country. When I think of all the manufacturers (Hawker, Siddley, Bristol etc....) that are no longer, it really saddens me. Those who went before us, sold this country out, and it was NOT for the better.

I’ve not flown that much, but of the ones I have flown on, the most impressive was the RJ146. A relatively small aircraft, carrying maybe 120 or so passengers, but the take off/landing/lift characteristics were incredible. Up in a flash, down in a flash.

I also freely admit the smell of burning aviation fuel still turns me on. And I have one quiet claim to "fame" in that I can claim to be an unofficial member of the "Ten Ton Club" when in 63' I was offered a seat in the T4 Lightning aircraft when we [No III Squadron] were detached to Cyprus. The pilot was a guy called Alan Garside and he, because I was the "baby" of the Squadron kindly took it up to 1000mph saying I would always remember it.....and he was right. Then later in the year he was killed flying a Lightning in a Air Show, I was only 18 and, I confess, I cried when I heard the news.:dunno:

I believe it was derived from a Hawker Siddley design (HS146)

I remember, as part of my training, we had to go for fire training. Whilst there, we heard a ‘roar/whoosh’. We all looked round to see a pair of Lightnings hurtling and disappearing over the end of the runway. The next thing we saw was the pair doing tail stands, hurtling straight up, and gone! Never seen anything like it, before or since. Amazing!
