Will certainly keep hassling the council, though have litle faith in the outcome. And no, I really don't want leylandii except in my more desperate moments.

Have been wondering about ash - on second thoughts the self seeded tree elsewhere in the garden is more likely to be common ash than mountain ash. It is obviously really happy, despite the poor soil, and has grown tall at an amazing rate.

Being deciduous of course means that an ash at the back of the garden would not block the sightline from the building in the winter. Eucalyptus seems to offer some possibilities. Presumably the root run would be as long as the height of the tree, so would not reach the house but would deprive other plants throughout the garden of nutrient/moisture?

Have you a post and panel fence?

If you have, you could fix trellis to the top and grow a few clematis up it.

Eucalyptus suck every drop of moisture from the soil. The white roots are very shallow and cover a huge area round the tree. For this reason we felled ours, as it was hopeless trying to cultivate the soil in the area underneath/ round it.

Yes, we will certainly be pursuing a maladministration complaint, as far as the local government ombudsman if necessary. I'm sure the council will get their fingers rapped; but I am not sure that they will be required to put things right. Matters are complicated by it being a PFI project, so the council don't actually own the building. I really would like to think that (a) people aren't looking into my house and (b) my daughter could sunbathe without being on show.

If they did fix the privacy issue, I could then think about standard climber type screening that would simply block my view of the (ugly) building from my garden.

Any thoughts on ash or birch?
