Although I lived a lot of my earlier life within the area where the Bow Bells would have been heard I'm not a Cockney either as I was born out of London.

Any one who was born within the area but is between 52 and 72 years old couldn't be a Cockney either, as the bells were bombed in the war and not rehung until 1961 :)

Apaprently, because of the higher ambient noise and the bigger buildings, the bells can now only be heard in The City and Shoreditch. Whereas they could be heard much further before 1940.

That would not have made any difference to a "true" Cockney though shiney ... they *knew* how far the sound was heard and took great pride in *knowing* ... even when the bells were silenced ;)

My paternal ancestors, for hundreds of years, were Cockneys and most of my cousins still are. Fortunately, they don't look down on me for not being a true Cockney. :heehee:

Harry, not quite :snork:. He sounded as though his mouth was full of boiled sweets and I don't eat sweets :heehee:

Most of the time I speak with a typical London/middle England accent unless I'm amongst Cockneys in the East End. Then my reasonably authentic Cockney accent creeps out from where it's been hiding. :)
