I agree with Hornbeam. As a very novice gardener with zero advice to give a lot of my posts are just banter. However, I can't say I look at the ratings or status, as you soon discover who gives the best advice on particular subjects.

 I don't usually comment like this but feel I have to here... I agree with Dendy, disagree with hornbeam, maybe we should scrap the rating system if it is causing you all so much hassle.... It is wide open for critisismn I agree... Shame really as it has never caused a problem before, except with the trolls of course.!! Personally I don't take allot of notice of them... We Post our questions on the board to get an answer.....!!!! Whether that person has a high rating or a low one is of no real consequence as we are all here to learn & pool our knowledge & are interested in the answers not the ratings....!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aren't we...???????????????????????????????
[IMG] I think we are very lucky that this board is as friendly as it is......!!! It is nice that we can come together to do other things on here & have fun, like playing harmless games as well as talking gardening....!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of us are unable to get out & about much so GC offfers vitual friends as well as knowledge, to what would otherwise be a very quiet life...!!! This board is here for us all to use in what way suits us......!!!! If it doesn't suit, try another board that does......!!! So Lets get on with it & stop worrying about ratings, & bitching at each other, that isn't necessary or nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well that is my thoughts on the subject anyway....!!!! Well said MF.

    In short the answer is...

The ratings system is utter balls, the gradings are utter balls, the signature lines are a load of balls, whether of not your avatar flashes is a load of balls, the 'losing focus' of GC is a complete load of balls and the amount moaning on GC about technical features and the like recently is utter utter balls.

Interestingly put, BM. Heaven only knows where I got the only rating five from! I agree with you Windy, I don't look at the ratings and status but may direct a question to someone who I know is knowledgeable in that field.

I'm for scrapping the system ... other boards I pop in and out of don't have such, neither do the ones t'other half uses. I'm going away now to remove my rating ....

Just as a 'by the way', at some point this evening, ratings will be disabled.

The ratings system causes nothing but problems in my eyes, I have consulted the Moderators, and they agree that it would be best to do.

    Nathan.

Now, Nathan, what about the possibility of becoming a guru, while only ever posting on the jokes and non-gardening section....

I must say - it was (I think) Fran's comment along the lines of "I posted the one word "soup" and became a guru member" - that made me realise that this was a rather silly situation! But there is a real problem, in that someone could be genuinely advising others, but be totally misguided him/herself. So, how is someone supposed to know that the advice is rotten, if the person has posted a lot, and therefore has "guru member" attached to them? I'd rather that vanished too...

Sorry, Nathan - more work for you! Are you getting much sleep these days, BTW, or is baby JAck keeping you awake?

I'm with Dendy on this too. I think the titles are misleading and if at all possible should go.

No I don't agree with BM that all technical comments are balls. If members have suggestions to make to improve the forum, then they have a perfect right to make them and others to express their views. Nathan and the moderators decide whether a suggestion would be of benefit and feasible. [IMG]

BTW - what does the new thing "report post" do? When do you use them?

Agree, Fran - everyone has a right to make comments - and up to the powers that be to consider them and make their decisions.

Hi Fran and Dendy [IMG] , you are right genuine technical comments and questions are not 'balls' and I apologise if my balls have caused offence, but, in my opinion, there has been a lot of moaning by people using genuine technical threads to comment on the general healthiness of GC which is neither solvable nor helpful. I too think ratings are misleading but not sure it really matters. As I said before...in a perfect world we would have no ratings but is it really that big a deal. People ask a question, if they think the answer is credible then good, if not ask someone else. Even would be experts can be wrong. Newbies really aren't that wet that they would gage the credibility of an answer by whether you are a guru or not. Im not sure, green fingers, expert or guru are that distinguishable to attribute quality of information anyway. I belong to loads of forums about stuff I haven't the first clue about but I don't trust the advice based on names rather if it sounds credible. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and those that disagree with me are right to do so if thats not their way of thinking, but ackowledging that ratings and names are just a bit of fun and not really that helpful, if we just get on with posting interesting threads and worry a little less about the what ifs, and who's got what rating all the better IMHO. :D

Hey, BM, that's a bit heavy for me tonight but I think I agree ...

I still go by who I think knows something and can / will direct specific questions to that person ... Liz for roses, you BM for lush, Pete and Strongy for exotics, Shiney for veggies ... sorry if I've left someone out .. but you DO get to know who knows what and ratings don't come into it or names ...
